Thoughts on this muffler. I just bought it...

I will be going with a custom 2.5" B-pipe soon, and a y-pipe after that. Just can't afford everything all at once.
Any thoughts on this HKS muffler?? 2.5" inlet, 4.5" tip, all stainless.

So I made a good purchase??
I was a little hesitant to buy a universal muffler, but a whole cat-back system like Greddy or Cattman is way out of my price range.

Anyone know how it will sound with just my CAI?

Got it for $199. The guy at the muffler shop said he'd give me a deal to install it, cuz he's got a 98 Max too, and asks me questions about mods a lot. How much do you think he'll charge me?

Looks nice.

Dunno about the sound though (what to expect from just the HKS) Your noise levels will jump dramatically when you put the 2.5" B on, which will eliminate the resonator. When you put the y-pipe on, be prepared for even higher noise levels.

I've got the same muffler. Looks good, made for 95-96 models so it
sits tucked back under bumber on 97-99. Tone is low/mellow. Can't wait until I get Y & B pipes also. Muffler has a rep for rusting, mine has been on for about 11 months so far no problems.

Ant, headaches from the muffler being too loud?
I want some sound, but not headaches. I guess I'll have to see how I like it. Should be getting to my door around Thursday, then I'll have it installed Thursday or Friday.

I wanted something simple but nice, with a rather large tip. This seemed to fit what I was looking for perfectly. Not a Greddy, but money is tight.

I had the HKS bolt-on muffler. With just an intake, the sound was great. With a Y-pipe the loud was quite a bit louder almost too much. After the B-pipe (which still had a resonator), it became too loud. The drone from 2200-2500rpms was very annoying and pronouced in the cabin. I got rid of ita and went back to stock. This universal HKS muffler looks like a straight thru design which means it will be MUCH louder than the bolt-on one which is interally baffled like stock.

I second this comment! I just took my maxima back to the shop last week to have the stock muffler put back on... Cost of stupidity? I lost $100 and explained it to my wife as "research and development..."

Man, I agree with you guys. I have a hybrid CAI, y-pipe and universal muffler, and it's pretty loud and annoying. It sounds great when it idles, but the drone is already starting to make me a little crazy. This is making me very hesitant to get a b-pipe. I want the performance gains without the noise. I'll probably get rid of my muffler and put stock one back on if i were ever to get a b-pipe. how does that sound?

Had the muffler installed today w/ a one piece 2.5" B-pipe with no resonator. Sounds great!!!! Inside the cabin is a little loud but not too loud, outide is great. Nice and low, throaty sound. The drone is a little loud around 2000-3000rpm then quiets down significantly above that. Top end gains are very noticable.
I was a little hesitant to go with the B-pipe, but I figured I'd do it eventually anyway, so I went for it.
Cost me $150 for the custom B-pipe and muffler install.
Should have the Y-pipe in about a month or two, depending on the money situation.

Expect a SIGNIFICANT increase in loudness with the Y-pipe. The Y-pipe's precats muffle a ton of sound. Don't say we didn't warn you
