The 0-60 Intake, CAI or POP
The 0-60 Intake, CAI or POP
Basically we all know that the HAI is the better intake design for high end power, and the CAI is the better for low end. Or do we?
In the quarter mile, the HAI will probubly yeild better gains than the CAI, with both yeilding gains over stock. But, on the 0-60mph times, which intake do you guys think is gonna shave the most time off, and how much?
I'm gonna go with the CAI, becuase around town I could physically feel a LITTLE bit more pull and no lag with the CAI over the pop. I could squeel my tires off the line a little more as well.
Let's say for example two stock 1995 5spd SE's, one with a POP charger and one with a CAI.
List your choice and why.

I prefer HAI because I drive mostly highway miles and that upper-end grunt comes in handy. Let's see if anyone can make a comparison with me...
'96 Auto w/ HAI
Best G-Tech 0-60MpH: 6.88 sec.
What are you autos with CAIs pulling on the G-Tech?

Way too close to call. 0-60 is ALL about available traction. If both cars get off the line at the same time, it will be very hard to gauge which one is quicker because the race is so short.
Example:
I've raced a few LS1 F-Bodies at the track. Looking at timeslips where I've had similar reaction times and 60 foots as the much quicker F-Body, the amount of distance these cars put on me is pretty minimal until I hit the 1/8 mile marker. After that they walk away fast. In the 1/8 mile I'm typically hitting 76mph. My Maxima is probably good for a low 6s in 0-60mph when I hitting 2.2 60 foots. An LS1 is probably good for mid 5s when hitting 2.2 60 foots. Most LS1s only put put about 1-1.5 cars on me by the 1/8, but remember that this is when I'm going 76mph and they're going 80+mph. What I'm getting at is if the LS1 that's getting mid 5 0-60s and is only putting 1-1.5 cars on me in the 1/8 means that they're only maybe 1/2-1 car ahead of me by 60mph. .5 seconds in 0-60 is a matter of a few feet (8-16 feet). At the end of the 1/4 mile the difference of .5 seconds is a matter 50+ feet (easy to see).
Simply put, "if" the CAI equipped Max was indeed quicker, it would be very hard to gauge. After the 1/8 mile, it's all over for the CAI equipped Max.

My pr cai in my RIP 93 Altima GXE 5sp was great...low and mid range gains were real. When I had it in WAI (I've never heard of HAI) form (removed lower tube), the car sucked arsh until 4500rpm, then it came alive, but the pull at redline wasn't much better than cai or stock.
Personally, I prefer cai cuz it's in the usable range...and neither helped very much near redline.
sorry, I don't have a gtech and my altima was involved in a hit and run. Plenty of pics: http://www.altimas.net/forum/showthr...threadid=27355

The HAI will win simply b/c the Maxima does not need any extra low end grunt in the 1/4, and that's where the CAI makes its mark. The Maxima doesn't need any more low end torque b/c it's hard enuff to launch as is with its FWD nature. When I had my CAI, if I was in street races, i found it very hard to launch. The CAI just broke those tires up. Now, converted to hybrid, it's harder to make the tires break tread, but I tranfers all my grip to the ground and get moving faster. The HAI does not add any low end, or maybe a little more/less, and it adds on top, where the Maxima can use it best.

ThurzNite,
Totally unrelated, Mira Mesa is a beautiful area, I was stationed in San Diego and spent time in Mira Mesa and had friends in Chula Vista, I would love to move back there.
Interesting perspective. I'd never have thought of it that way.

are you saying that you often pull better 60ft. times than V8 camaros and Firebirds? They have RWD and I thought they would destroy us down low off the line..I mean a FWD car with a powerful V6 like the Maxima is hard to get to launch right, and beating a V8 muscle car that was designed for staight line? Please explain..

My track isn't particularily sticky. Most street-tired late model muscle cars are lucky to get 2.1 60 foots and many are in the 2.2 range. Getting sub-2.0s requires drag radials at the minimum. Even though they are RWD, 300+ft/lbs of torque at 2000rpms makes these cars a bear to launch. I had a 94 Z28 and it was FAR harder to launch than my Maxima. Having FWD and high torque isn't a HUGE disadvantage for me. High torque means I rarely bog even if I spin then hook up. I never "peg-leg" launch nor do I get any ugly wheelhop. I'm getting better at launching due to my new tires and better driving. Pulling off higher 2.2s is pretty routine for me now which is very competitive with the muscle cars. Once they get hooked up though, they can usually walk me.

I just think it's awesome our little V6's are even hanging with those huge muscle cars or even giving them a sweat.
The power of the M A X I M A is not something to joke about.
