MAXIMA transmission bearings problems...easy to spot?

doing conversion like most and when i go to pick up trans from junk yard, i want to make sure i won't have problems with bearings...i have warranty and all but i don't want to have it installed, THEN find out my trans is garbage...is there ANY way to find out if the trans will give you problems just by looking at it before you even install?

also, how much would fixing the bearings on a trans cost?

Tare it down, inspect it, replace any components which appear worn, put all new seals in it and consider yourself the owner of a rebuilt tranny!

how much you think all of that is going to cost?

and if i'm going to do that, u think i should just buy a messed up tranny and have someone rebuild it for me?

Get a tranny and inspect it. There's no way to know what your actually getting unless you take a look inside. The seals aren't that expensive. If you open it up and everything looks good, then consider yourself lucky! Just put all new seals in it and install it. If you open it up and find metal flake, bearings that don't look so hot and chipped or worn syncros, then your in for a few bucks. But again, the tranny is already out of the car so your saving yourself that cost.

I say open it and inspect it. It's cheap insurance.

I couldn't describe that to you. There sort of next to or set up against the gears themselves. All assembled on the main shaft. You'd really need a pic from the FSM to see them. There kind of smaller then the gears themselves with angled teeth. Unless your a transmssion guy or have taken apart a 5speed, your not going to know whats what in there.

I've done a 5 speed before, it was actually quite easy to rebuild. I didn't have to touch the main shaft of half (secondard) shaft, but have replaced all the bearings. You will need a press to get some of them in and out.
