e-Bay Upper Intake Tube Question....

Has anyone bought this yet? I bought JUST the Upper Intake Tube to go with my JWT pop-charger, but it has four hose outlets on it, and my stock resonator only had three... Hmmm... Anyone know what the fourth one would be for? Also, if anyone has installed one of these, could you offer your impressions...

Thanks...

I want to know about this also, Im looking into buying it. I was wonering what that 4th thing is also. I like it because it has a velocity stack and you can attach a BIG filter to it . The aluminum looks thin, so it'll probably be LOUD. JsL

yeah it'll be louder than a regular intake since it does replace the stock resonator. Do some searches on "hybrid intake" and ull get all the info u want

I instaleld my warpspeed upper half the other day. Nice pipe fit well and everything connected fine. My cone filter before never really made any type of noise or anythign but now even at idle you can here a hiss type sound. It is of more air being pulled in now. You can hear how much more air it can receive with jkust the upper half and a cone filter. Worth picking it up.

I installed my WSP upper Saturday morning before going on a 120 mile road trip and thought it was pretty loud. That was until I installed the rest of the CAI Sunday. This thing is f-ing LOUD. I mean at WOT it will scare women and children in the next county, not to mention the people in the cars you will be passing. It even took me by surprise the first time I wound it up. Love it! I can hardly wait to get the Y-pipe and cat on...

I believe the sound isn't from more air going through, since the same amount of air should be entering the through the filter/MAF. The sucking sound is just from the resonation of the air in the metal pipe rathter than the plastic resonator (which was designed to reduce intake noise). However, I do think the pipe helps smooth out the airflow and reduce turbulence and/or pressure drops.

My original post got a little off track. Not that I mind or anything. I just need to find out more about the upper intake w/filter kits being offered on E-BAY.

Hopefully this will bring things back on topic a little...

Has anyone had any experience with these?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

I bought the PR upper tubing directly from Place Racing, but my pipe only had 3 hose outlets. There was a 4th hole which wasn't for a hose. It was for the temp sensor that is only on (I believe) 97+ Maximas. If you don't have the temp sensor you can just plug the hole.

umm, i didnt buy one, but i made it myself...the sound isnt really louder, just seems more condensed.....and i get the sound at lower rpm's now....i made mine with only 2 holes, and plugged off the one that goes to the side of the engine with a breather filter....looks clean, and accomplishes the same thing, for alot less money

pic of it here

Do you get a whistle at all? I considered a breather, but on most cars I've been in with them the breather causes a whistle at idle or under partial throttle.

naw, havent noticed a whistle....a slight "muffle" if you put your ear near the breather while someone is revving it, but then youll go deaf by the deafening sound of the intake, with your head 3 inches away from it at 6000 rpms

I also did a DIY Upper Intake Tube with a 3" coupling, 1/2" nipple, and barb fittings... With the design I used originally, I think I'll sleep better at night knowing that I won't lose a barb fitting or nipple in my throttle body.

I purchased the upper intake tube off of e-Bay for $50.00 shipping included. Small price to pay for piece of mind...

Also, in response to the thread about the fourth hole... My Max is a 96. According to your thread, the 97+ Max's had a temp sensor. That must explain the fourth hole. I guess I'll cap mine and not worry about it.

Thanks

Is this the pipe and intake from ebay seller DOHCivic on the East Coast somewhere? I bought that pipe too and it didn't come with instructions either. I have a 97 Maxima and there were 4 nipples on the pipe although only 3 vacuum hoses were connected to the original. There is a 4th hose that is venting the automatic transmission of my car that does not need to be connected to the pipe although the seller said that it was supposed to go there. I just used a vacuum hose cap for the fourth nipple.

Unfortunately, when I pulled out the stock airbox and piping there wasn't a place to plug in the a sensor (O2 ambient temp, I think). The check engine light came on, and when I asked the seller about it, he said to just disconnect the battery to reset the ECU. The light eventually turned off after a couple of days, but does anyone know if I should be concerned?

I also have a hissing sound coming out of the hood now, but I guess it's a matter of preference. I kind of like it.

I installed my Upper Pipe from e-Bay. Yes, DOHCCIVIC (in New York) is the guy I got mine from. I also picked up a 3/8" Vaccuum Plug from Checker Auto Parts to cover the fourth hole. (I don't know where he came up with the auto tranny cooler idea. I have an auto, and I didn't see anything of the sort.) The upper intake tube works AWESOME! The throttle is much more responsive. Before, when I opened the throttle manually under the hood, the lag was extremely noticeable. Now, it is MUCH more responsive!!! I took it for a test drive, and was all smiles. Real loud at WOT, and much more responsive at low end RPMs. Best of both worls with a JWT Pop charger. I ordered the upper piping only (outside of e-Bay) from dohccivic for $50 shipped. (Please, if anyone else wants to do this, make sure you do it through Paypal.)

I highly recommend this to anyone with a Pop Charger! E-mail me with any questions. Also, I'll try to post a pic of it installed.

By the way, I stuck the sensor from the airbox inside my Pop Charger, and you can do the same with the K&N that DOHCCIVIC sells. Just stick it inside the filter, and tighten the clamp down. I wouldn't be concerned about it. Mine laid outside the filter for a month with no problems. I just slipped it inside the filter tonight...
Sorry for the long post.

I just saw that on e-bay the other day and was wondering about it myself and found your post, thanks! Is it much louder under "normal" grocery getting/commuting/driving with my wife type of driving? How about freeway or interstate driving? Did you ever get a picture of it installed? What is your impression now that you have a couple of weeks with it?

It's really not that much louder. It basically deepens the sound and makes more of a sucking sound at idle. There is extra sound reverberation because the resonator is replaced with a metal pipe, but I don't think it's too loud. I'll take some engine bay pictures soon and post them.

I LOVE IT!!! Read loud when you want it to be, and quiet and mellow when you don't... My wife drives the Max half the time, so I don't like her to get annoyed. You'll love every minute of it... To the grocery store and back... I'll try to take a picture tomorrow.

Thanks...

Yeap, I just installed this thing from Ebay... dude, either I did something wrong, or he gave me the wrong piping. There's an extra hole? The origonal "Black Air Box" had two connector hoses. This one has Three? what the hell? am i missing something? I corked it and taped it up, then put a blue hose over it to cover it. Not to mention after this I had to replace the origonal two black hoses becasue the stock ones didnt reach. It came with the K&N cone air filter so im happy. and it looks a lot better then the black box. Before this I just had a cone intake with the black box. Its not much of a preformance boost, but it does look better.. but im still wondering, what the hell is that third opening for?? damnit.

Here's a picture for ya...

Anyone else experiance this with? I have a 98 max.

To answer your question about the extra hose... There is an extra hose for Manual Transmissions... I went to my local auto parts store and bought a 3/8" Rubber Plug designed specifically for Vacuum type applications... It was like 2 bucks... Pick one up... I'll try to post a picture of what mine looks like with the plug.

I actually did that once when I did the DIY Upper intake with a 3" Coupling... You could do it either way, but I would still keep the hose going from the upper pipe to the Valve Cover... It's closer to stock without any improvement, or loss of performance...

You know the old "if it ain't broke don't fix it theory..."

I thought I read somewhere that you said it was a weapon R dragon tube, if it is that fourth opening is a transmission air recirculation tube, I don't know if yours is auto or manual but on my 96 5spd I ran the tube to a little port looking thing on the transmission, if you never had a 4th tube then just plug it up, but the 4th hole is for a air recirculation tube on a manual tranny.

Here is a picture of the UIT with the plug on the fourth hole (for manual tranny cooler.) I had to use red Heater Hose because they were all out of black... I need to replace it soon...

Heater Hose

With the E-bay Upper Intake, you will want to buy 3' of 5/8" Heater Hose from your autoparts/hardware store... The factory hoses are too short after removing the resonator...

From the pic...the intake doesn't look like a direct fit. The coupler connecting to the TB looks stretched because the pipe doesn't align.
