Power Door Locks on 92 SE

When i try to open up the doors by just pushing up on the locks, the doors spaz out and unlock and then lock in less than a second. The only way to get out of the car from the front seats is to hit the unlock button from the driver seat. Or after repeated attempts to open a door with the lock itself it will eventually work. Is this part of a safety system on the car, or is something wrong with my electronics?

Sounds like your door lock timer is going out. Buy a new one from Courtesy Parts, or pull your unit and repair it / have it repaired. Supposedly it only involves soldering loose connections (but ask Matt, he's an EE who's done this before).

this is a very common problem when our cars reach the age they are, and it is the power lock timer, as mentioned before, and as for whee to get it definately go through Courtesy Nissan because their prices on stock parts can't be matched. Also the other thing while you are doing this is make sure your window regualtors are all good, this would be a good time to replace them if you can afford to and they are not working properly!

i have a similar problem, the locks in the car would unlock/lock with the power switch every so often, now they dont work as much as they used to i always have to manually unlock/lock every door, would this be fixable with a new power door lock timer also?

This WOULD help your problem, but it WOULD NOT help the first person who posted. If the door locks begin to work only occasionaly at first then eventually not ever, that is the door lock timer, which you can replace, fix (if you are good with soldering circuit boards), or have Matt93SE repair it for a small sum. The door locks fighting you is a different problem originating in some door mechanism. If you able to get around it by using the lock/unlock button then the timer is fine.

Yep,

The same thing has been happening to my Maxima for around 4 years now. I may try the timer device replacement. My car only does this thing on the drivers door (ie when you turn the key to unlock the lever inside starts to move up the immediately moves down) only. And only when the weather is cool. The passengers door works fine in all types of weather. What I usually end up doing is letting the system 'bob' for about 8 seconds and then unlock the door, or if i'm in a hurry just holding the key firmly while lifting the door handle with the other hand. Maybe I'll look into getting some kind of remote unlocking device to simplify things. Does anyone know how much these timers cost, where they're located? If so I would like to know if I could switch the timer for the drivers door with the one for the passengers door.

Please advise, thanks nice forum..

Like I said in my post above, if your locks only work intermittently (from inside or out) then the problem is the timer. Yours are fighting you so it is not the timer. There is only one timer for all doors. It is located underneath the dash on the drivers side to the right of the steering column but left of the console. They go for about $80 new. Remote unlocking is certainly an option. I have my car alarm lock and unlock my doors, but then if you have the fighting problem then you also probably have the problem where your car doors occasionally lock when you slam the door shut. This is the reason I leave my door open an inch while my car is warming up in the morning while I’m in the house. If your keys and car alarm remote are in the ignition and you are outside the car when it locks then the remote unlock feature doesn’t help too much. Also, I don’t use it to unlock my door because there is the occasional setting off of the factory alarm. I need to look into this more but I believe it is related to the sensor in the lock assembly which may be part of the same problem as the doors locking and not wanting to unlock.

When this is happening, I can hear a clicking sound coming from under the dash, and the lock tab on the door pulses up and down. But this only happens during cold weather, and only on the drivers door. I can even make the system do it whenever I want by sitting in the car, pushing the door lock tab down, and slowly raising it. I'll probably just get an unlocking mechanism since I always wanted one. They sell at Crutchfield for $69 with wiring diagrams, and harnesses.

Anyone else notice this or have any ideas of what's going on?

Thanks
