car will die every now and then

only when i come to complete stops and its not all the time my max will die. one of my valve cover gaskets was leaking so i replaced both and the little "O" rings in the valve covers also as far as i know the leak cleared up but my car still dies any ideas, i thought that it would be a sensor but my check engine light only gives me my engine coolant temp sensor. could that be it. oh yeah im going to replace the sensor anyway

thanks

Re: car will die every now and then

Does it die only when it is cold? If so then there is a good chance it is the coolant sensor.

well i posted this earlier tonight and well it did something that it has never done. i was doing about 60 cruzin at 2k RPM and all of a sudden my max started jumpin. i played with it for a while and it would only do it when i barely popped the gas it was just spariticly poppin. then i turned the corner and was going about 10 or 15 and it died agian. cranked it back up reved to redline and everything was working fine again. my check engine light says line pressure control valve (automatic). no i havent cleaned my throttle body and my filter hasent been changed either. could there be anything else that im missin???

I had similar symptoms as you described, including high speed RPM jumping.

I saved last post, I'll save you too. It really is the Temp coolant sensor. Mine was the same way, but my check engine light never went off. The fact that yours did, its a grauntee. Don't question it, it all makes sense when you think about what the sensor does. Replace it, and you will be all set.

I had the same problem, it was the engine coolent temp.
There is a thread somewhere on this site explaining what the ects does but i can't remember where it is... do a search.

Mine sputter, when i tried reving the engine it blue out smoke and then stalled. Clean the throttle body, then change the ects ($36 from dealer). If I can find the thread i will post it here.

FYI -- I've had that problem too -- I've changed both those sensors, to no avail!!!

NO

I'm starting to think its either my TPS or my fuel pump...In any case,
I will let you know -- but, I think the important lesson here is don't change
things unless you know its broken, unless you want to do it as part of 'maintenance'.

I'll let you know what happens -- I want to test my TPS, but I just
haven't had the time.

best,

TPS Problem

Symtoms:
Rough idle in park and drive. Car rpm will sporatically drop to below 500rpm. Rarely feel anything going 50+mph.

Solution:
After doing a search and reading the post on rough idle, the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS ) seemed to be the closest to my problem so I deceided to investigate it. I followed the Haynes manual and determined I need to replace my TPS. The resistance values did not match the manual. However, since I did not have time to purchase one, I deceided to adjust the TPS to match what the Haynes manual says. After adjusting it to the best that I could, my car idled a whole lot better for the first couple days and now it came back but still not as bad as before. I'll hunt around for a replacement TPS and buy it then. I hope this helps someone else as this forum helped me out.

well i finally got it fixed... my cel would stay on and give me all kinds of messages... i ended up replacing my engine coolant temp sensor but the code was still there even though i reset the ecu. so i dicided to take it to the dealership and just so happens that my efi wiring harness had a couple burnt wires... anyway got it fixed and no more prob. plus the cel went away and everything works perfect now. hope that helps
