Yes, stick with NISMO87SE's recommended Chevy 350, you shouldn't have any clearance problems.

V8 swap

For weight reasons you may think about an aluminum block. Other possible contenders in the low weight, high output class: supercharged 3.8 Buick, Twin dual cam 3.4 Chevy, 4.3 Vortec. Just for consideration.

gearbox etc,

With an auto, a 700R4, most likely, a manual, a t-5 would be my choice. You'd have to have a prop shaft fab'd. There is a r-drive bellhousing I have seen for the Chevy small 6, have to investigate further. Someone put a multi-port 2.8 in an early '70s midget and swapped out the original clutch slave. Looked pretty clean. A 3.4 will give you up to 220hp and less weight than the L-series. I just don't like the timing belt change procedure on that motor, but once it's in-line the way a motor should be, I suppose it would be alot easier. On the 3.8 side, I have a bellhousing for that I might be convinced to part with.

There are many V8 conversions available for the L-series Datsun Zs. Since the 82 maxima is basicly a 4 door Z, I would start my conversion search with one of the Z V8 conversions. Mostly likely a Chevy 350.

Re: Rear wheel drive conversion

If it were necessary to swap from fwd to rwd then you would be correct sir.

I saw an old 1986 Cavalier that came stock with a FWD 4 banger and was swapped out with a 350 V8 and RWD, so on some cars it certainly is possible.
