GPS / Nav, hardwiring your receiver

If you have a Staples store near by, they may have a Rand Mcnally Trip Something 2000. yes, 2000.. its very discontinued.. the maps and software are crap.. but inside the box is a nice little NMEA 2.0 receiver. it requires 4-6V and seems to lock about as fast as a CF GPS or my $300+ Garmin Vista. Ok, the Vista locks a bit faster it absolutely blows an Earthmate away.. but so could a carrier pidgeon bringing you maps.

But get this.. $15-20. Thats all.

The black box is about playing card box size. Right now, I'm considering on mounting locations. I dont know how far the serial signal will reach before it starts to freak out. I'm hoping I can get this mounted on the rear deck and the length of cable needed to get the serial output to the dash wont be a problem.. from there I'm using an Ipaq with Teletype software for Nav. However, I plan to put a PC on the rear deck sometime.

Nothing really special about any of this other than you might be able to snag a GPS receiver for $20 and hardwire it.

So that receiver along with some Street Maps software and a PC is all I need?

yeah...

I guess my point is that the receiver is so cheap (in cost) that you can mount it permanently. Its actually a high quality chipset. Snag one if you can find it for $20. They were on the bargain table.

AND, unlike the earthmate, its a fully NMEA 2.0 complaint unit.. will work with all the pocketpc apps and all the pc apps. yeah, I like Street Atlas 9 with the voice prompts and commands. nice package.

I have several programs and GPS units. I'm doing an alpha test in a few days for some Nav software for PPC. its really promising. The NDA wont let me say much tho.

Hi Tim,

I've used Delorme's GPS packages for a while. (Had one of the early Tripmates... )

Street Atlas 9 is the last incarnation of Street Atlas with that interface. After this, they're going to the Street Atlas Deluxe interface. (Which sucks, btw. It's the same interface that they used with Topo-3D. Non-intuitive, extremely hard to use on the road.) If they eff-up Map-n-Go, Delorme will have successfully lost me as a customer.

Is there equivilant software (that's updated as frequently) that exists? (i.e. door-to-door routing, breadcrumbing, logging, etc.)

And geez, let us know when your NDA runs out...

yes..

I too HATE the new inteface.. its impossible to use on the road. I have the Deluxe (I also had that travisty called Road Warrior edition on version 8). But if you think thats bad, their new PocketPC version is MUCH worse.

Right now I really like Teletype GPS on my Ipaq. As much as I want that $4000 Kenwood system (or the $2000 stock navi), I'm making do with the $55 Teletype GPS BTW, I like to set the voices to French or German. Not sure why, I dont speak either, just very humorous, well until I miss a turn cause I couldnt understand what she said..

Does it apply to Palm VX application cause the GPS for palm is mighty expensive.

I am interested of getting one for myself

The good one is by TravRoute and it's called Co-Pilot 2002 for $399. This program re-route if you miss the exit and other features that Garmin StreePilot III or the GPS V.

Hey Tim, I am going to look for this, but if I cannot find it in my area could I send you the money to get one for me? I would really like to add GPS to my car but everything else is too expensive.

I only nabbed one.. and I went back, none left..

right now, I use this on my Ipaq 3670

I was using my pricey garmin for signal, but managed to wire in the cheap sensor I got the other day.. works great, aquires quickly.. stays locked.. not bad for the money.
