Child safety switch under clutch pedal on 87 Maximaa.....

Is anyone familiar with the safety switch located under the clutch
pedal in an 87 maxima which prevents the car from starting unless the
pedal is pressed down all the way and makes contact with the switch.

How easy is this to replace and is it something that I can do
myself....
I looked under the dash and saw a switch with a bunch of wires
running from it.

The symptons are that car won't start sometimes and I keep pressing
the clutch pedal down all the way until the car finally starts.
There is the clicking noise sometimes of course but nothing more
and all the lights are on on the dash until the car starts.

thanks..

I have replaced the switch. Sometimes it slips back and does not make full deprseeion. Mine had only two wires on the 1988. If your s does you can just twist them together .... but it will start in gear!! So be careful! ( It should unplug just behind the switch?? It should be very easy to install a new one .. $35.00 from Nissan!!)

Twist the wires together. Why in god's green earth they started putting those damn safety switches in is beyond me. If people are stupid enough to start their car while it's in gear, they deserve to run it through their garage door. Every once in a while it is nice to be able to move the car via the starter anyway. For instance if you can't get it started, and need to get it up your driveway. Put it in gear, and use the starter. Not the best thing in the world to do, but it is nice to have the option if necessary
