Factory exhaust system life?

Please post how long your 4th-gen factory exhaust/muffler lasted before it rusted out or got holes in it. Mine has 40K miles, I want to get an aftermarket muffler but would rather wait till the factory unit dies, if ever. Are they made out of stainless or regular steel?

I have just over 76K on my '98 SE and I still have the original exhaust/muffler and so far everything seems fine.

I got over 160000 km on mine. I suggest several trips to Mexico.

Alot of it depends on the length of your trips. When you start your car up and for a while afterwards you will get the familar white smoke, condensation, coming out the exhaust. If you drive a short distance and shut the car off this condensation will lay in the exhaust. If this happens enough the exhaust system will rust out earlier than expected.

I have a short distance to drive to work and this has been a problem for me on my past cars. I've had my Max for less than a year so no problem yet, but I expect it to be.

How much of the stock exhaust is stainless and what parts are plain steel? Does 1 section tend to rust faster than the others?

Rotted To $hit

I have a '95 Maxima with 125k miles on the beast. The muffler NEEDS replaced very soon as I am starting to see light through it. I live near the coast and that sucks for OEM longevity.

103k on my '95 SE. I just pulled the OEM exhaust (y-pipe to muffler) off last week. The OEM muffler had a 3 inch rust spot on one side, but you couldn't see through it or poke your finger thorugh it and it was just as quiet as the day I bought it in May of '94.

Everything else looked fine. No cracks or rust throughs.
