custom supercharger, why not

So what keeps us from using a thunderbird or mb kompressor/supercharger (can be purchased at very low cost... 500 or less) and just custom fabbing a mount and getting the plumbing for it ?

I am very close to doing this, and just wonder what the problem is going to be, and why no one else has been doing this... although maybe its like 5spd conversion where i lead, they will follow - haha

I say go for it. I've wondered the same thing myself. Only thing is it has to be a blower type, and not the other type. You'd need some type of fuel managment system and all, but I say if you got the time and money, go for it. It wont be easy, and you'll run some risks but if that doesnt stop you, go for it.

PS just wnted to see how many times I could use the phase "Go for it" in 1 post.

why not

People are pretty much customizing the Stillen kit to a more powerful, more reliable system anyway.

I'm not sure of the other kinds of SCs are suited well to the VQ. The Vortech unit is nice for the 4-gen application. You would need to fab a lower intake manifold to sc adaptor plate. I guess you could hack/weld your stock one. I also don't know if it will fit inbetween the V6 heads or not.

I've read about people talking about this countless times over the last two+ years. However, it's been just that: Talk. But for some reason, I kind of beleive you when you talk about it hlh!

I guess it could be done. I would think the hardest part would be mounting the supercharger to the side of the engine. Especially knowing that the SC pulley has to be in-line with the stock pulleys. I can't even imagine where'd you begin on that. And you'd have to tap into the oil supply, make an oil return, get an auxilliary fuel pump, custom piping to accept the MAF, the AIT sensor, etc., etc. I'd guess you'd be pushing over a $1000 after everything. And when a used one can be had for low $2000's, you'd have to be hard-up for money to go through all the trouble (or perhaps in your case, you enjoy it). My first reaction is to say it isn't worth it. But if you do decide to take it on, I'll help you in any way I can (ex. answer questions about the Stillen charger). Good luck.

what about a turbo...?

Hey, I was wondering if you could just like go to the junkyard, and maybe find a wrecked Eclipse or sumtin, and take out the turbo, and maybe make alterations to fit the max. Does anyone think this is possible? And if it would be a hard job, what kind of difficulies would there be to use a foriegn turbo in a max? Peace...

You'd have a better chance at this. Doing a custom turbo is easier than doing a custom SC.

I apologize, I meant IAT sensor. That's the Intake Air Temperature sensor. Read my step #31 write-up:

To anyone who has the S/C, how hard does it look like it would be to copy the mounting bracket for the S/C, that seems like it would be about the hardest part, and I'm good at machining stuff... Make all the pieces custom, then slap on your own Vortech S/C, or even one from another company... I know Steallin probably has a copyright on it, but if your not selling the kit's for money, maybe just offering up the spec's to those who want to try... just a thought...
