Sunroof is falling apart
Sunroof is falling apart
I'm having some problems with my sunroof. The rubber part of the sunroof, the trim part that goes around the perimiter of the glass, is just coming off. I can't tilt the roof anymore, because when I close it back up, the hanging rubber gets all smashed in the closed roof, detaching it even more. Is there an easy way for me to fix this, or should I take it to the dealership and fix it that way? Thanks
Reichmax97,
I have the same problem; however, I'm in the process of trying the do-it-yourself approach after the dealership told me that the weatherstripping is part of the sunroof and costs $500. Anyway, I started this today and when I took the glass out (this is the easy part - remove trim piece and 3 nuts on each side) there was alot of rust behind the weatherstripping, so removing the rust became the first task. Now that the rust is sanded down and everythings been primed and painted, I need to install the weatherstripping. The problem I'm having now is two fold: 1) the weatherstripping isn't going back in the groove of the trim piece surrounding the glass and 2) I'll need an adhesive to keep it from stretching apart and leaking again. Wanted to pass on my experiences. If anyone has any tips or knows what adhesive will work, please let me know, otherwise I'm going to the dealership and bending over.

I tried to put it back together with some adhesive as well but encountered the same problem, it doesn't fit back into groove, and the more I mess with it, the more it comes undone. I don't want to do much to it myself anyhow, because as far as I'm concerned, I'll mess it up more than help it. I have it sealed enough now to the point where no water will leak in but it renders my sunroof useless

I replaced sunroof weatherstripping - here's how
Just finished reinstalling my sunroof weatherstripping on a 95 SE and it wasn't as bad as I first believed. This is the process I used and it worked well IMO. To start at the beginning: I noticed a gap in the weatherstripping at the middle rear of the sunroof. I figured, I'll just buy some new weatherstripping and be done in no time. Hah! First I got the Chilton manual and studied the diagram of the roof carefully and the instructions on removing the glass and since it looked simple, I proceeded to the dealership for the weatherstripping (WS). No dice, they said that the glass and the WS go together and It'll cost $500. Note: I still haven't found out if they sell the WS separately.
Went home and took the glass out by tilting the sunroof up to remove the trim on each side (one phillips screw and then pull out). Once the trim is out, there's three 10mm nuts to remove on each side. You'll need to slide the sunroof back (open) to get to the forward most nuts. This was very simple given my motor and everything else about the sunroof works fine. No signs of water inside the roof, so drainage must be working well.
My sunroof had rusted badly in a few spots so I had some other things to fix first. I pulled out the WS in order to treat the rust problem properly. BE CAREFUL AND DO THIS SLOWLY!!!! I very slighty chipped the top of the channel holding the WS in place. One side appears to be plastic and the bottom is metal. They make tools for removing WS, check with an auto paint and body supplier, it may be worth a few bucks.
Primed and painted the rusted areas and then in order to reinstall the WS, I got some black 3M Adhesive 08008 made for WS installation and spread it in the channel in a few areas as I put the WS back in. I used a tool which I think is called a spline which is used for installing screening on porches. It's got two plastic wheels - one on each end and you just bear down and go very slowly and the WS finally goes in flush.
By the time I got back to the beginning, I had about 3/8" too much WS, so I trim it off and added some additional adhesive. Sprayed the tracks down with CRC and it closed nice and tight. The real test will be tomorrow since we've had rain for about 12 straight days.
The total cost was $11.65 (adhesive and primer - I had the black gloss spray paint). Hope this is helpful to others with this annoying problem.
