In The Market for new Rims, Need a little help

Hi Guys,
Im in the market for new 17 inch lightweight rims. I referenced the weight chart and searched through a few websites, and here is the best I found:
http://www.wHalentire.com/wheeldetai...10H40S&size=17
http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Displ...atin+Sil+Paint
Weight 16.5
http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Displ...Silver+Painted
weight 17.0

do you know of any other wheels with equal or lesser weight?

Thanks for any help!

I don't care which 17" wheel you purchase, stose95. Just make sure it's at least 7.5" wide.

Hmmm, How come?
I was planning on keeping everything stock measurements. (17x7 w/ 225/50/17 tires)

When you move from the stock 7" wheel to a 7.5" wheel, you open yourself up to a much wider selection of tires that will safely fit your car. There just aren't many choices of rubber at the stock size...and what ones there are are very expensive.

I see what youre saying, so I could probably go to a 245-45-17 size or so.

Triple8Sol i checked out those axis wheels, 4 spokes seems like they may be a little weak. Looks are not that appealing, but thanks for the reference anyway.

That tire size would be an excellent choice on 7.5"-wide rims.

I have a 7.5" wide rim and according to Toyo, I should not go any wider than a 225 series. They did not recommend a 235 40 18.

Really, asu174? Did you get your information from the Toyo web site? If not, perhaps you ought to look there:

http://www.toyo.com/tires/index_frame.html

Pay particular attention to the third column from the left with the title "Rim Width Range (inch)" at the top.

Once again, folks, don't take ANYONE's word for tire specs. ALWAYS get your specs from the manufacturers' web sites.

My bad. I was confused. I thought you were referring to 17" rims, not 18" rims. Sorry about that!

Now I'm REALLY confused. A 235 is a 235 is a 235- right?. If you can't fit it on an 18" x 7.5, then how the hell can you fit it on a 17x 7.5???

235 is how wide the tread is, not the diameter of the tire. It could be a 10inch wheel and a 235 would still fit as long as the rim is wide enough to safely accommodate that desired size.

So a Nitto 235 could be different than a Kuhmo 235? That makes NO sense to me.....

Let's see if we can make some sense out of all this. The confusion seems to be over aspect ratios. If you go to the T&RA Contour (Rim Width) tables on Page 5 of the FAQs, you'll see that the rim width ranges are the same for 17" tires and 18" tires provided the TIRE WIDTHS and the ASPECT RATIOS are the same. Thus a 235/45R17 tire and a 235/45R18 tire both have acceptable rim widths ranging from 7.5" to 9.0". Likewise, a 235/40R17 tire and a 235/40R18 tire both have acceptable rim widths ranging from 8.0" to 9.5".

Hope that helps.

You can fit a 235 on a 7.5 inch wheel, some manufactures reccomend it, some don't. I've done it many times.

Y2KSE- I screwed up too. I neglected to realize the we were talking about a 45 series tire on the 17.....there's the rub.

Bryan- I wish you had told me that before I bought my stupid ghey 225 series...arggghh I guess it doesn't look too bad though.

Right Bryan. As asu174 and I have been discussing, it's all in the aspect ratio. You can mount a 235mm tire with a 45 or higher aspect ratio on a 7.5"-wide rim and remain in spec. But you CANNOT mount a 235mm tire with LESS than a 45 aspect ratio on a 7.5"-wide rim and stay in spec. The proof is in the T&RA Contour (Rim Width) Tables on Page 5 of the FAQs.

Ahh..I love enlghtened and informed

discussions. To put this discussion in perspctive, there is an idiot in the parking lot outside who installed 245/60 Dayton (????) tires on a Buick Regal -with 6 inch rims. The tread is at least one inch outside the rim on each side...
Ignorance is bliss, eh?

Yup. If he lives long enough to achieve bliss, that is. Exceeding the acceptable rim width range by 0.5" is problematic. But exceeding it by a 1.0" (as is the case with 245/60s on 6"-wide rims) or more is just asking for trouble.

6 Inch? Are you being sarcastic? they are 13"s right?

So, in conclusion, it is NOT acceptable to mount a 235 40 18 on a 7.5, but it IS acceptable to mount a 235 45 18. yes?
