What's the difference between an OEM and a non-OEM bumper cover?

I'm getting one that is not OEM, but it was approved by insurance as a suitable replacement for OEM. I'm dissapoineted by this but I can't do anyhtgin about it anymore, so I want to know if it's gonna a problem with chipping or not being as durable. Any thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Fitment and quality. I would demand an oem cover. After all, it came with one right? I would even prefer a rebuilt oem one over a new aftermarket one. I had a rebuilt one on my wife's old Accord. Very nice.

Of course it was approved by your insurance company. An aftermarket cover is considerably cheaper than an OEM one. Demand an OEM one for the exact reasons that Jeff pointed out (unless it's too late). If your insurance co. gives you problems, pay the body shop the extra $$ for the OEM one and take it up with your insurance co. later. Aftermarket covers are crap.

I wish I could...sadly this bumper wsa not replaced by Insurance for accident or anything like that, it was for my 97+ conversion. I should have paid more attention to this before getting it, but oh well....live and learn. got it from some folks on Fleabay.

Oh well. As long as it fits nice, don't worry about it.

Thanks...but I somehow just have this sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I'm gonna see flaws in it that probaby aren't really there.

I'm such a paranoid freak. hopefully it will fit ok.
But the lesson is learned here folks...always ask before you buy...

I have experience with a non-OEM bumper replacement. It was actually on the car when I bought it. First off, the paint job that they did on it was CRAP. I put a piece of electical tape onto the fog lamp area for a few minutes, and i took it off, and the paint peeled right off. While I was installing the lamps, I saw on the inside of the bumper cover a "how-to-install" for the cover. Cheapo.

But I have no real problems with the bumper cover itself. It fits well, except the fog lights don't seem to fit as well as my stock SE one (since I cut out the holes myself). It's just the paint I'm annoyed about. Be sure to get a quality paint job on it.

how many layers of paint is that? What is the standard for OEM paint?

I know at a custom body shop, it's a few coats of base color, and at least two coats of clear (for an aftermarket paint job).
