Track Night Scare

I have a friend that I let run my car at the track at least once everytime we're there. He's a good driver and can usually equal or better my best time for the night. Tonight he wanted to try out the nitrous, so I give him the keys. I tell him to do two things: Don't spray in 1st and shift before 6k. He launches pretty good(2.2 60), shifts into second and hits the nitrous. The tires light up and the motor bounces off the rev limiter 3 times(with nitrous spraying). Shifts into third, takes it to the limiter and it bounces once. I just knew that was it for the motor. I walk over to the car and its purring like the day I bought it. What a damn good motor. I ask him what happend and he said he wasn't expecting the nitrous to hit so hard and that inside the helmet it was quiet and didn't realize what was happening utill it was too late.

On the bright side I did get a new best, but still traction was hard to come by.

Why would I need a window switch with a 5 spd?

Not smart. Get a Harlen one...its only like $50, and you won't have to worry about the rev-limiter ever again!

Omg, I wouldnt even think of squeezing manually with a 5 speed! !!
If you want to keep your motor and tranny get the switch.
Itll be easier for you to race as well...
Can concentrate on other things...

At our track I have not met anyone with a window switch. I didn't even know what one was until I read it on here. Some of these cars are 10 and 11 sec cars too.

Manual guys, or auto guys? I can see not having one with an auto, but I would think about it with a 5sp. If you're wheels hop and you don't get off quick enough, you're flirting with disaster.

That sucks.

I always assumed window switches were a common thing...

Although, I suppose they'd only be necessary in cars with a fuel-cut rev limiter. Aren't most cars ignition-cut?

What rpms should the window switchbe set for? I am thinking of 4000rpm-6400rpm.

I'm spraying 100 shot. Don't think I'll get a window switch. I'd rather trust myself(not my friends anymore) than to trust a switch which may not work(I've got one that dosen't work, never did). I myself have hit the rev limiter while spinning when I first got the system. But now I know when to let off. Wheel hop isn't that bad with the urethane motor mounts.

You're not really trusting the switch, its more of a backup in case you mess up.

$50 is a lot less than the cost of a new motor.

Yes they are ignition cut thats why I can't see the necessity for a window switch. As soon as you hit the rev limiter the ignition is cut so you can't do much harm.

I have seen a few 5 speed guys doing a burn out and hitting the rev limiter and then realizing they had their nitrous on and not doing any damage so I really can't see the requirement in the real world.

Yeah, if we had an ignition cut I would bother with one either. However, bad things can happen with a fuel cut system like ours.

Honestly, is there a point to having a fuel cut system opposed to ignition? I wonder why Nissan went that route?

I believe it just takes concentration....WIth my zex arming switch set up all i do is switch it up and down accordingly. I never use it in first gear either i rely on my driving to get me through first gear. You have 500 rpm's of leadway time before you hit the rev limiter just need to practice some self restraint.

Most EFI cars are actualy fuel cut NOT ignition cut. Ignition rev limiters are generally the aftermarket ones. If you spray any type of wet kit you can run the risk or over revving the engine because of the supplemental supply of fuel.
