effects of nitrous

Hey, this topic comes up a lot. So i'd like to see what peoples opinions are. I have the ZEX wet nitrous system on my car with bottle heater etc, running a 75 shot. People all the time - at the drag strip, on here, when i'm talking about my car - say stuff like "usuing nitrous puts 10,000 miles on your engine every time you use it.

I dont know where people get these ideas, but it annoys me sometimes. For example right now i'm looking at selling my car - i'm getting alot of criticism because it has nitrous on it. OK fine, but you dont see people who tc or s/c there cares getting criticized for the wear and tear they put on their engines. The way i see it, a correctly set up nitrous system (especially wet) running an appropriately sized shot is no more detremental to your engine than running 8-10 lbs of boost on a turbo. Also i use nitrous like 4 times every time at the drag strip and thats it .. as opposed to a turbo putting wear and tear on your engine every time you leave a stop sign and give your car some gas.

I realize the thing under my name says newbie.. but i've been doing work on my own maxima for 2 years and i always do all the research and get a lot of opinions before i've done anything, especially putting nitrous on my car. I understand that its not necessarily beneficial to the engine. But i also am not worried about my car blowing up any time soon. I'm just interested to see if everyone thinks that nitrous is really all that detrimental or if its just people who dont know alot about it who think its the worst thing ever.

well on the engine i cant see much dammage being caused with the zex being used sparingly. if you go to the track lets say only 2x a month using it 2-4 times each. it may be okay. but if you are goin to the track 2x a week runnin 2-4 times each time then i can see some wear accumulating. with anything FI, you have to keep a close eye on things. do compression checks often, checking oil, plugs, coolant, and also check on your A/F ratio often.

what kinda gauges do yo have, id recomend a tranny temp one also, esp since you have an auto. if anything would be worn and dammage id say its would be the auto box because the vq is pretty good but the tranny is kinda fragile, esp with a 75 shot.

im no nitrous expert, but i think heavy use of a 75+ shot on an auto is not gonna b good. i mean we have N/A maxes with auto's with basic boltons complaining of trany problems.

i want to run a 50 shot personally but i dont want to screw up the tranny. it seems strong at some times but i occasionaly get the feeling something is gonna go wrong.

>>>>>maybe one day

yea, the only guagues i have are nitrous pressure and air/fuel ratio. However, i feel like i've taken the necessary precautions for running nitrous - i do check my oil every time i get gas, have ZEX colder plugs, and check all my other fluids often. It just gets on my nerves when people assume that putting nitrous on yoru car is pretty much garunteed screwing it up.. and when they feel like posting that on my wanted ads

nitrous won't harm the engine if everything is set up right.

I made the mistake of not doing a compression check before I put my nitrous on. I sprayed like 5 times, which was only a 35 shot but when I went to replace my spark plugs I blew a gasket.

Only one of the 5 shots gave me a true 35 shot because of the faulty connections.

Just make sure you check the compression frequintly and plugs too.

if you run a slightly rich shot youll be fine, just dont tune to the ragged edge of nitrous rich.

The reasoning behind people usually saying nitrous is destructive is that the horsepower isnt a gradual onset but a quick violent burst which if ill timed yadda yadda yadda can exert extra pressure on internals etc. It is a more violent takeoff if you will whereas with other forms of fi its a more gradual takeoff IE the turbo spools, the charger builds a larger charge, nitrous BAM 75hp and 125lbs of tq right off the line.

if you used it responsibly im sure your fine, especially with a comp controlled setup it would just come down to amount of times you ran it and what your current cylinder compression is.

As well did you use the zex jets?

i use the zex jets, and whenever i go to the track i hit the nitrous at 2500 rpms so it doesnt hit the engine at a dead stop

As long as you are tuned properly, and on a comparitive basis, starting your car every morning causes more damage than you kit will...
