Loud POPPING sound when accelerating hard

i installed a custom short ram with a k&n filter on my 99 se and ever since i installed it..when accelerating pretty hard on it it makes a similar noise that an exhaust would make backfiring but the difference is...is that it is coming from the intake.. and suggestions?

It is a backfire, or is the intake just hitting something?

Did you secure the intake down in any way, or just let it hang there?

Is it only while driving, or does it do it while just revving it in neutral?

And of course, have you put the stock intake back on to see if the noise went away?

So, the problem is that your "custom" short ram intake is louder?

no its deffinately a backfire because its in there good and secure...and no it revs great in nuetral but when you put it in first threw 5th it popps like a mother...i havent really had the time to switch the stock but my buddy said that and i gotta do that..you think if it still backfires it could be due to a bad mass air flow sensor?

It's possible.

So, the obvious question that should've been pre-emptively answered in the first post:

Did you do anything, did anything happen, or did you have anything done to the car immediately prior to this condition?

Excepting the intake, of course.

Also, is there any history of other problems with the car?

And another answer that should've been provided in the first post...codes?

Whens the last time you changed plugs, and are they something besides NGK?

once that happened to me, but it was because a piece off the filter fell off, got caught on the MAF screen, and was restricting airflow. check that out

the plugs really could cause this problem? like say im in first and have it at like 4 grand and snap the pedal it will pull but start going..POP POPOPOPPOP! and the following gears are twice as bad..its robbbbbing my accelleration..i really think its gotta be a bad mass airflow sensor but maybe ill throw a new set of pluigs in to be safe but the plugs really helped you out?

could still be any number of things, especially noting that you haven't answered the question about whether or not you're getting any codes.

I had the exact same problem When i put my short ram intake on this popping noise your hearing is the cone filter hiting the engine bay side of the fender well becuase no ones engine is 100% stable the cone moves from road vibrations and hits this metal creating a pop noise. Nothing to be worried about you just need to find something to prop the intake up maybe "zip ties". lol
