Just got my new GXE, couldn't afford the Se or GLE to get the Bose system. Would it cost insane money to install at this point, can it be done to GXE, or better off to go with
aftermarket system. Also, can these speakers be upgraded immediately? They don't sound the best. The system is the upgrade to 6 speakers and premium deck.

ouch, youre in the same situation like a lotta us. i really wanted the base gxe so that i would get a double din dash, but alas, i did not. therefore, we must buy the 'vent console thingy'. that's like a hundred bucks or so and you need that before you can get a din or dd sized deck in there. as for speakers, i believe that upgraded speakers will work with the deck, but the deck's output is pretty shot to begin with.

if

u not gonna dump alotta money and u just want a nice system to cruise with, i say go with the pioneer double din.. it's real nice. get components, the deck has a decent power output to push em'.. i suggest mb quart pro series or boston acoustics..

but if u got more to spend then go dynaudio.. whitemax is running it, ask how he likes it.. i'm ognna run illusion audio horns and carbon nd-8.1 midbass by illusion also.. 400zxti phoenix gold amp for the midbass and 600zxti for the horns.. gotta feed alotta power to the speakers to make them sound nice... imo..

it's not worth it to get the bose.

New speakers... oi!!

Well, I went through the hassle of installing new speakers. All the shops show our 2k Maxes as needing 6 1/2. Well if you get them, they won't fit! The factory speakers have some weird spacer thing built right into them. I went to Circuit City and Best Buy, neither of them had proper spacers, I called Crutchfield and they had something but I'd have to drill some new holes anyway. So I said screw that. I mutilated the stock speakers and used them as mounting brackets for my new speakers.

Since I didn't upgrade the deck and I'm not a mega car audio freak I went with two $50 pair of pioneers with a replacement plan, that way I can get them replaced if the stereo kills them, plus best buy will let me trade them up at full retail price to a new set of speakers if I decide to do that at a later date. I've got the front two speakers in and I'll be yanking the rears and replacing them later today. I've got some pictures taken of all the stuff I had to do with the old speakers to turn them into mounting brakets which I will post later today as well.

On the subject of speakers....

What size speakers are in the front and back? Are they both 6 1/2's, or are the rear speakers a different size?

6 1/2s

I know the fronts are "6 1/2" I know the back are supposed to be too, I haven't gotten a chance to replace them yet, the mods to make the speaker into a braket take a little while.

Here are the pics I promised:

This is the lovely high quality paper speakers that came in my 2kSE.

Here you can see the stock speakers vs. my pioneers, obviously the stock won't fit.

Here you can see the speaker from the back, I have sawed out the magnet and cone and soldered on the wires for my new speakers.

The stock speakers have a lip that made it impossible for me to screw my new speakers onto them, so if you look closely you can see where I used my hacksaw to trim the lip all the way around the speaker.

Here is the finsihed product from the back. I mounted them with the pinoeer grills attached. This is because the stock speakers were more recessed then my pioneers after I attached them to my new "bracket". They still fit in the door no problem.

Tools required for this ghetto-rigged job:
hacksaw
flat screwdriver (to help remove trim from door so you can remove the panel
phillips screwdriver
soldering pen/iron/gun

Thanks for the pics. Sounds like a lot to do just to make the speakers fit though, but it looks like you did a good job on it. Thanks again..

Thanks. It was quite a pain especially for just $50 pioneers. After going to Best Buy twice and Circuit City and calling Crutchfield I was on a mission to get those damned speakers installed.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I used my drill to drill pilot holes in my "brackets" after I finished with them.

I just order a face plate kit from JL Troy for $25 w/ harness and S/H. They say it's for the Max w/ the premium sound crap. I'll fill more details when I get it (sometime tomorrow or Tues)

if yuo wanna keep the stocks

after you replace the speakers, intead of modifying the stock existing mounts, you can build one outa mdf board, just hope u have a jig saw cuz u gona b cutting alotta circles. if you get speakers reall nice midbass in the doors, i suggest you use dynomat on the doors, seal up all those holes in the doors, but make sure you remove all the weather sealer that's already there along with the putty like material. by doing that you've created a somewhat sealed enclosures for your speakers. it'll also get rid of some rattles you might encounter..

Re: New speakers... oi!!

Hey dude,

There is really no reason to go through the hassle of mutilating the stock Maxima 2k speakers. It is much easier to order the plastic BOSE speaker brackets for the 2K maximas. The cost like $12 to $24 and the fit perfectly in the hole of the current Maxima doors. Any 6 1/4" speaker will easily drop into the Bose brackets for a much cleaner and better installation. Also, the plastic on the Bose brackets is much stronger than the crappy baskets on the stock 6 1/4" baskets.

For those of you in SoCal, Autosound Specialists on Beach blvd in Westminster changed my front and rear speakers. They have the spacer brackets you need. They do a great install job too. I also got my tint there, and alarms for my other cars. You know they are good since they are always busy.

Install was $30 for me, but I had a bunch of other stuff done too, so it should be around $35, plus you don't have to destroy your stock speakers.

Best bang for the buck upgrade is a speaker swap, then the head unit. I have been putting off changing the head unit because I would lose my steering wheel controls. An amp may be the next step...
