Keep it OEM if you want it quiet and last a long time.

I bought the following from Amazon.com a couple years ago. My mechanic charged me $125 to install it. He basically just had to take the old one off, bolt this one on and put it in the hangers. I also bought the walker 31311 gasket on Amazon. I have a female mail person who wasn't thrilled with having to carry this to my front door.

Walker 48317 Muffler And Pipe Assembly

I had it about three years and it's actually very nice muffler. It is stainless steel and has holes for water drainage. I made the mistake of getting a slightly cheaper one that was made of aluminized steel on eBay prior to this and it lasted all of two years. This one looks terrific it is perfectly quiet three years later.

My OEM Muffler lasted almost 20 years in New England weather, but I could not justify the cost of an OEM muffler replacement on a car that was almost 20 years old at the time. Walker mufflers are quality parts.

does the walker muffler come in one piece, or does it have to be welded?

I have two 3rd gen Maxima, I replaced an OEM back in 2003 from Nissan and last year, I went to the yunk yard. I bought a muffler from an Infiniti I35 in very good conditions. I took it to a reputable muffler shop and build the rest of the pipe. Then, i pre it and paint it with high temp paint.

No welding. The pipe is pre-bent to fit the car and has hangers attached.

Think of the exhaust as coming in sections. Out of the exhaust manifold at the engine, it attaches to a header pipe which bolts to the catalytic converter. The walker part bolts to the other side of the cat and just hangs on hangers all the way back to the muffler. What I listed is from the cat back. No welding. Just buy the gasket which is at the cat/walker bolt up and you should be good to go. You or your mechanic will only potentially have an issue getting the old rusty one off. PB blaster and heat usually do the trick.

Magnaflow is a good option. It is a bit louder than stock and not annoyingly loud.

If your looking for a good solid muffler that's thick and won't leak for probably as long as you still have your 3rd gen I have a thrush muffler. It's not a quiet one by no means. It has a nice aggressive tone if your into that sort of sound. I could sell it to you cheap but you'd just need to cover shipping. Pm me if your interested in it.

A Magnaflow 22" x 11" x 5" rear muffler and a 22" x 4" round Muffler as a resonator...Awesome sound...!
