The ATF is black and needs to be changed before this car finally makes it on the road. I did some Googling and many here say Dex 3 is fine so that's what I'm going to use. Couple of questions Is this the return line from the radiator? It's on the driver side above the other transmission line that goes to the passenger side
And what is the capacity before it goes dry? I put some tape in the drain pan at quarts thinking it might be 4. How much should I drain at a time?

I think it's driver's side, but it's been a while. I added a bottle of lubegard and it's been about 20k with perfect shifts. Tranny has about 173k on it. (Supertech dexron III high mileage)
The pan holds about 4 quarts. Drain pan, fill it up, then drain through cooler line while shifting through the gears. Stop when bubbles come out and refill. Do a couple more quarts if necessary, but it should be clean. Shift through the gears some more to get the air out and top off. Go for a drive and check level.
You can remove the pan for inspection if you want to see how much metal is in it and clean the magnet, but you don't have to.

I put Lucas long lasting synthetic ATF in mine a while back.
id recommend Nissan Matic if its A/T or Nissan oil formulated for manual. The Nissan oil may have deleted certain chemicals that conventional ATF oil added IDK for sure.
the Lucas "long lasting" synthetic worked great but at $8/quart it better.
10 US quarts that sounds about right.
id say warm the car up then check the dipstick with car running.
and i can see that battery ground in the picture bolted to a badly rusted plate. Not sure if they sell replacement mounting plates but what you could do is strip the rust from it then apply high heat primer paint.
