The rear cup holder wasn't in use so I shut it. And now it won't open. There's nothing in it. Am I missing something incredibly stupid like a button? I'm getting frustrated and breaking things

It was open when I acquired the car and I made the mistake of shutting it last week. I've been pulling on it and now the handle snapped in the front. It feels like something up above has fallen down. No idea what. Will I have to take the entire console apart to try to fix or remove it?
I had this same thing happen to me. The thing was
#1 you never think about it the mechanics behind it until it gets jammed.
in other words you never knew exactly how it becomes a cup holder
#2 you dont really ever use that because your always driving right?
I think I just grabbed it and pulled on it and it came out. I Cant recall
