Took the 97 and 98 to the recycling yard. The knuckleboom loader must be so fun to run. It picks up cars like nothing and turns them into carnival rides. They wouldn't let me ride it one last time. I was too short or didn't have enough tickets or something.
Anyway, here's a bit of a farewell to my first car I bought and I'll share some pictures from over the years.
Far too much rust. The rockers were gone inside and out. Same thing with the rear quarters. I started fixing the rust, new rad support, fenders, rocker patch but the inner structure was too far gone. Not worth it to me.
Your 99 looks like it's going to be VERY nice, but it always hurts to lose your "first".

I'm enjoying the 99 and I'm not really sad because it is so similar to the 98. I have made good progress over the few months I have had it. Soon it will have even more of the 98's DNA.
Speaking of firsts, my dad bought a 96 SE in 99. That was the start of it all for me. I was in high school and learned to drive with that car. I lurked the org for years before joining. I put some parts onto that car which ended up on the 98 and now 99.
Wow so rust is the only issue that are killing these cars.. luckily I still have my 4th gen white pearl in really good condition and little to no rust because I don't live in salt/snow areas. Do you still have that 96? because that is one shiny 4th gen. By the way, I don't see any rust in the pictures with the whole engine and suspension completely removed. Have any pics of the rust before you removed everything?
Those pictures of the 96 are from around 02 I think. Thar car was sold off after my dad bought his brand new 07 SL.
The picture where it is filthy was before I tore it down. There are holes every where I didn't get pictures of. Floor pans near the kick panel, near the bottom rear seat belt bolts, front inner fender. The car ran great, only had 136k miles. It was parked for a few years.
Oh wow, I bet if rust wasn't an issue it'd keep going for many years to come. I'm guessing that beige 4th gen in the background is your new replacement? Hows that one doing?
Yes the 99 is new to me this year. It needed very little to get it up to snuff. I bought it from the original owner who kept it in tip top shape.

had a shady body shop fix my rockers and holes in the floor board. we'll see how long that will last. so far it seems solid, he used some kind of panel system to fix the floor boards. maxy has had an intake leak for awhile and has stalled on me at slow speeds or a stop if it's not warmed up. gonna fix that soon.

Silly me, I didn't post pictures of the 97 parts car and I didn't take many. That thing was really really really rotten. All the same places as the 98 x2 plus every door, hood and trunk all full of holes.
Sad to see, the Maxima SE 5-spd was my first new car. It's disappointing that rust has been its achilles heel. When we were looking for a wiper linkage about 5 yrs. ago, I saw many 1995-1999's in the junk yard already. I would have been tempted to get an arctic pearl front left fender, but there were none, several plain whites....
900.00, not too bad. still, not super happy with the work he did.
Cut out the rusted panels and weld in new sheet metal? I plan on getting a harbor freight welder when I sell my old car I guess I'll be putting it to use in the future I wouldn't wanna pay even 900 for that especially if it's not that good of work
Having a welder has become very useful. I have a Lincoln 140c. I wanted a very nice 110v that can be adapted for aluminum if I choose to. It has paid for itself no doubt. I use .030-.035 flux core for bigger or not so pretty jobs and .025 with gas for thinner material like sheet metal body work.
