auto tranny shifter won't go all the way back

yesterday i tried to take my car over to my mechanic to do some work to maxy and i can't get her past reverse, and she barely goes into reverse. cable lock up somehow? i mean it's moving but it wont extend, i think the shifter cable somehow stretched and won't extend back, shift lock solenoid is fine. brake pedal switch doesn't sound like it clicking when i press it down to engage the transmission. thoughts? thanks

Damn misfire and now this? I'd just pay a professional diagnose fee to clean up the mess before it becomes throwing parts at it..

Check the control cable for splits in the plastic casing. I've seen these things develope a split in the casing and cable pooches out kinda like a hernia and it no workie no more.

If that all checks out try this:

thanks turbo, i am aware of the cable stretching issue. i think i need a new cable as i remember a shop 3-4 years ago just doing a quick fix on it and not replacing it. i can get it into reverse barely, but not past it unfortunately.

As a temporary fix and based on the location of the split, if you can actually get to it ... a length of appropriately sized fuel line or other reinforced or hard plastic hose/tubing can work.

Split the hose and slip it it over the “injury” like a splint. Works like a hernia mesh.

Secure it with a bunch of zip-ties secured all along the length of the hose/tube.

Might work in your sitch, might not.
