My friend says that when coming to a stop really fast, turning the overdrive off is like shifting down a gear, and it helps brake somewhat, is that true? I dont wanna go out and mess up my transmission doing this, has anyone tried this? My friend says it like powershifting for cars with stick, but what does he know? Do any of you do this to your automatic? Whats bad for the transmission and whats not? Someone please help me out. Thanks...

Hello:

I pretty much take out the overdrive at every exit ramp or whenever I'm slowing down from highway speeds... Going from 4th to 3rd won't hurt the transmission unless you repeatedly take it out of Overdrive at speeds approaching 100MPH.

That is what the button is there for... If it would hurt the car, why would they put it there?

If my RPMs are low enough, I sometimes select and hold the tranny in the "1" or "2" position. Like pulling away from a stop making a left turn on a wide intersection... So when I round the turn, it's still in 1st gear about 2500RPMs... so I hit the gas from there and it takes off pretty good...

But going into the "1" or "2" positions repeatedly at higher speeds can be stressful...

my two cents worth

I do the same thing in my 95 SE & it slows the vehicle dramatically. The catch, if I do the same in my mom's 98 SE, no such drama. It's as if I was still in O/D. Any clues?

For what it's worth, I use the O/D trick all of the time and I've driven my '96 SE since it was new. I haven't experienced any tran problems from using the O/D button to help slow the car down or using it to gear down to provide a little quicker passing power. I say use the O/D button (but never for evil!).

I have no idea what's going on with the '98 SE. Are you sure it actually shifts into overdrive?

Huh? DUDE??

Are you a guy or a girl. If you are a guy and just asked this question you just insulted the whole generation of men.It will not hurt the tranny unless while stopping after a 130mph run. I agree with the earlier statement. If they put it there why would it hurt the tranny. Plus if you hit the thing at 90mph it will send the revs up and do nothing else. The tranny in my other car a supra wont let you take it out of overdirve past 90mph its got some kind of computer mechanism that keeps the car in overdirve after 90mph, this does not mean though that if I take it out of overdrive at 70mph that it will go into overdrive at 90mph it just wont come out after 90mph.
