Supercharging an Auto
Supercharging an Auto
Ok I have tried to put off getting one put I want a SC, problem is I have an Auto. I have been reading all other threads and posts and I am still not sure. Can I run a SC on an auto with a VB mod and tranny cooler. I read in an old SCC mag about the auto becoming a weak link when subjected to repeated hard launches. So if I run stock pulley and a respected PSI and make repeated hard launches I could be fine right? If I do get one and the SC ruins the auto I will just end up getting a Manual. What else can I do to prevent blowing the tranny. Y2kevse is the expert on the SC auto so maybe I can get some pointers?

Re: Supercharging an Auto
Some autos are freaks, others are complete wimps. Mine's holding up pretty well, and considering the amount of boost I've been feeding it lately, that's surprising! hehe. VB mod and cooler help a ton.
I'd almost say it has to do with the VLSD for some reason, but then again Kev's wasn't. I think his was one of the longest lasting?
The guy that Daniel Chen got his s/c from had an I30t with a vlsd too.. it held up for about 25k miles or so....
Bottom line is, you probably won't get more than a year or maybe a year and a half without having to rebuild the tranny or switching it. Or about 20-25k miles. The internals will just wear from the excess power : it's just a matter of time and how much your transmission likes its components' shape. It's also a matter of how much preventative maintenance you do on it to keep it as oblivious to that extra power you're putting down. Less heat via cooling and better fluids that will not break down and that will lubricate better, and also less stress on the clutches via the VB mod.
I personally take her to WOT regularly on a daily basis, and the transmission is VERY weak, but it still works (except for a missing 4th gear when cold). That's also a detail; some trannies will fail at the same point in time as in which some others will barely keep themselves together to remain sufficiently operational to shift and take you where you need to go. It all depends on what part is most worn out first
I've got about 70-80 timeslips sitting in this very room that were all done with my s/c installed.. just to give you an idea.

From being sc'ed with an auto, I truly recommend supercharging turboing only if your manual. The auto will not hold up even if its supposedly "beefed up" in the long, plus having only 3 gears to boost isn't fun at all. I'm saying ths because the sc is cool and all, but I really wish I did the manual conversion 1st, then the sc. The SC took my 1st auto tranny after the 1st blown 2K miles, though the tranny was already on its way out at a total of 127K. Totally unprepared, I couldn't get the manual conversion at the time and had to settle fo a rebuilt auto. Its much stronger with the rebuild, but I'm pretty sure it'll go out again, that's why I'm converting in the nex few weeks. I'm just tryng to get to a track before this tranny goes out. If you plan on staying auto with boost, I really think its mandatory for you to have a tranny cooler and a vb upgrade. Just my 0.02.

I have a couple grand saved up to rebuild my tranny, after the rebuild i am going to get an SC. I know alot of u will say just do a swap if u have the money but I want to keep my automagic. My question is will the L10 rebuild kit be enough? (already have tsb, vb , and cooler done) Or should I also get there torque converter, and what will offer to me? This is sort far fetched but has anybody bought a fully built auto tranny from L10, there like 3500 i belive? appreciate any help thanks.

very true PCG! Which one puts more stres on the tranny TC or SC? I know there are variables in this question. Lets use stock stillen SC psi against 4psi on the TC kits which I belive is stock. Which one creats more punishment for the tranny? Or is this even a fair question?

3.6 pulley SC will max at 6psi....that's at the redline of the car. Since the SC boost is linear, which means you get little amount of boost at 4000rpm (prob. 3 psi). With a turbo set at 4psi.....that means you will get full boost at approx 3000rpm all the way to the redline.
if you take the SC to redline and shift, the tranny gets more work than the TC because higher amount of boost at that moment. So you one drives a SC'ed hard enough....the tranny gets more punishment in this case. The reason that I vote for TC is because it gets full boost at lower rpm than the SC. If you take easy on the SC'ed auto, you dont often see the boost gauge go beyond 0 psi. Boosting is fun and addictive...but it doesnt mean you have to punch her hard at every stop light.
I would say 50% is depends on driver.......
Jer's tranny is a strong one....with 70 - 80 time slips....his tranny is re-built by nismo
