Turbocharger Question

I'm kind of new to them..how much more power do you actually get? Do your 0-60 times drastically change or anything like that? When do you feel the turbo charger kick in (meaning what speed) etc.

depending on the turbo and the spool up, maximas might have a little different 0-60 times then my eclipse did.. alot of it was the AWD vs FWD... but almost any car benefits from a nice forced induction

Yup....turbos are nice, especially the spooling when you drive by a group of people and see them staring I don't have one but personally I'd supercharge my car. Less maintenence, no lag and MAD lowend power. Up to you, maybe you could do both at the same time?

I was driving around my friend's Volvo 850R, and it's a pretty fast car. Turbocharged I-5, but the turbo lag was kind of aggrevating. I blame it on a couple things. Firstly when I wasn't boosting, I was driving with a 7 year-old five-cylinder motor. That sucks. Secondly, it has been highly tuned for more linear application of power. I could live with the turbo lag if when it was boosting it would really push me bag in the seat, but it wasn't like that.

So, if you turbo a Max, you wouldn't have as much of the first problem, since the VQ is a mid-range torquey kind of motor. And if you boost a decent amount, the turbo lag is forgotten in the sheer bliss of the acceleration on boost.

so really, how much power would I experience? I had the choice between either turboing the car or buying a 96 m3..which is a much more expensive choice

go with your heart. At one time i would have loved to buy an m3 but since i'm 6'3 240 the m3 for me is a tight fit. Also im having fun modding my car, i'm bit by the bug so even if i bought an m3 i would start modding the hell out of that bugger which is alot more expensive to mod.

Nobody's going to spend 4 grand on a mod that isn't seriously noticeable. (Well, it is true that there are hardcore power addicts that will spend $3000 having their engine blueprinted for a 12 hp gain - just read about one such case today.) But yes, a turbo gives you major grinnage.

1. Change your oil religiously. Every 3k miles should be often enough. Change your plugs once a year. Other than that, I can't think of anything extraordinary you have to do.

2. Hard. If you haven't been around engines much, don't even attempt doing it yourself.

3. You can increase the power of your engine by from 50% to over 100%.

4. Count on spending $4000. Don't forget you're going to need to pay for stuff like gauges and dyno time as well as the cost of the kit.
