This is WRONG.. REMOVE THE CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL BEFORE YOU HOIST THE MOTOR OUT>

YOU CAN'T CONNECT AN ENGINE STAND WHILE THE CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL ARE ATTACHED

I also took out the motor mounts and filled them with glass weld... they did not look that bad for having 131,000.. sorry no pics, I will have some when they are dry.

And here is the motor on the stand, notice where the attach points are. Lesson #112 on this project..lol

See, your problem is you need a better engine stand:

Can't go wrong with a spare tire!!

Glad to hear is progressing, and that I somehow helped.

Putting the new engine in is a lot easier than removing the stock one. Now that you have a really good idea about where everything is and how its bolted up, etc, it makes the job a lot easier!

Heh heh heh...ghetto, but very effective engine stand. Hell, when I was transporting my GTO engine back and forth to the shop, I used that method in the back of my pickup

Yeah but I needed the stand to hold the engine as I tear it apart over the coming months.

And your thread about what you did what days helped me gauge how long it should take and how hard it was

Sweet! Glad I could help! Have you found that you're about on the same schedule I used, or are you getting things done faster, etc?

I just tore the engine apart on a pallet in my garage. Because I never plan to put it back together, I didn't have to worry about details...it was actcually kinda fun!

http://www.eric.org/maxima/img/vq_teardown

Take lots of pictures of the teardown/failure. I'm interested to see what exactly failed (do you know...I don't recall reading it?).

Link does not work...

No I don't know.

I have a feeling a combination of overheating, driving like an idiot, detonation.. and maybe another item.

I will have lots of pic.

I am gonna start from the top and work my way down to the piston head. Tjen I may go from the bottom up.

I have never taken a motor apart, this is gonna be fun

Doh...got my domain name wrong.

http://www.ericj.org/maxima/img/vq_teardown/

That's basically how I did it. Took the oil pan(s) off, timing covers and chains next. Rear timing cover, cams, heads, mains, crank, pistions & rods. Only special tools I needed were a pully/gear puller (for the timing gear on the crank), and a 10mm hex bit for the head bolts.

Its a lot easier (and I'd imagine less stressful) when you don't need to put the engine back together.

Looking at this pic, It's crazy to see how things look behind the engine. You can only have a mental picture when removing the rear bolts on the manifold and on the EGR.

You'll be amazed at how things are connected and what needs to come off to remove some items.

But from this point on, it will seem really easy for you! Taking off the intake manifold no longer seems like a big task!

I removed a manifold and put back together in 1hr 45 mins. I used a electric impact wrench and gear wrenches. But I did not disconnect the hoses just one. Not hard at all to get to the rear set of injectors. I climbed on top of the motor to get to the 4 rear bolts for it to come off.

Yeah, I'm down to getting the IM off in about 20 minutes. I didn't put the rear bolts back in (the brackets off the right head), just the EGR bolts. I remember taking it off the first time though, and trying to visualize the bolt layout back there without seeing it...made it a lot more complicated.
