custom piping $1000 to $1500, could use a BIG16G mitsu turbo (correct if I'm wrong) $600, oil feed lines $100, full exhaust $700, might need an intercooler (supra side mount or something bigger) $100~$400 and maybe a walbro 255 another $200 (I don't remember), 1st gen dsm bov $90
ADDS UP TO
$3600 in the worst case
Still cheaper then a $5000 dollar set up but still expensive

seriously I am not looking for major hp! only a small upgrade....so the needed items are:

1. custom piping
2. used/rebuilt turbo
3. full exhuast
4. oil lines
5. bov

anything else?

say i am only looking for 5-6 psi...It couldnt cost as much as a full blown turbo for a low amount of boost...could it?

I don't know if that is possible to get done, but if so you could use a 14b from some dsm guy for $150 and prolly get something else with it so hard to tell!!!

IMO you are wasting your time and money...for the price you end up spending to run a measly 5-6psi you could get a nice BOLT-ON supercharger(like Jeff said) for less or if not the same your gonna spend putting this turbo kit together and have a nice daily driver. because from the way you are asking questions, I take it you're gonna be paying someone to do this for you and the labor is where the price will catch you...I say look into a supercharger! being cheap and attempting to do a custom turbo setup will cost you more ESPECIALLY when you are new to FI.

ok, ok I take the hint (although not so subtle is it...) I guess since I am not an expert in FI and dont have 4000 to spend I better move down a level and look at those 1700 dollar sc....oh well, my dreams of a small, cheap turbo down the drain....eh

its simple...pay to play....somehtings cost more in the long run than others. and if money is an issue, putting together a POS cheap turbo setup is gonna cost you more down the road when it craps out on you. is that what you want? if so than by all means, shoot! the beauty of an SC kit is its 100% bolt-on and run and can be had as a COMPLETE kit for as low as $2k in some cases..and if you are only looking for small boost the SC kit is perfect for you out of the box on the "stock" pulley!

Not to mention 5-6psi on a turbo kit with say a t3/t4 is not going to give you 30-40hp. Its gonna give you near 75-100whp depending on the setup.

Like DA-MAX said, you have to PAY TO PLAY. I know it sounds harsh, but if you dont want to believe us, by all means go for it. Do the math and add everything up. Even if you did the setup yourself you still looking at probably 2000. Rebuilt turbo in the range of $500, intercooler $400, piping maybe $500 for the mandrel bends and straight piping. $200 for oil send and return lines and tap to oil pan. FMU $150, Walbro $100, FPR $200. Wastegate $250-400. Silicone couplers around $150. Keep adding, those are pretty much the basics.

If you want only 30-40whp, just get a simple 35shot or 50shot dry, wet would be better but its a bit more involved. But lif you looking for something simple, then dry shot is fine as long as you stay under 50shot.

Otherwise like other said, SC is probably better cause it bolt on, and dont need all these other parts that a turbo needs. SC at stock pulley almost is maintenance free (give the belt dont shred).

Wow...I like the sounds of that

BTW...on a stock pulley, about how much boost are you making? And about what does that equate to in WHP/TQ?

You could do it cheap, it wouldn't be reliable. i say your best shot is a small shot of nitrous. Cost less or around 500 dollars.

stock pulley will be about 6psi, on a 5spd, you will probably make 235-240whp on a 5spd. TQ will be less than that.

I was thinking more along the lines of an auto w/ like the VB mod and stuff. And I realize TQ is going to be less (usually far less), but hey...that comes with FI. Still...that's amazing gains for the price.

Also...would that $2k price figure include guages and anything else minor needed?

Auto with VB might be around 225-230whp. The $2k price is obviously used. That is generally what they are going for in the ForSale forum. Gauges included? well depends on the seller, most of the time no, cause the gauges can range in pricing from a $40 boost gauge to a $300 boost gauge.

i have a turbo i30 and im gonna tell you that if you want to do it right you have to spend dough and some of the kits are some times not enough. if i could do it all over i would beef up the tranny first, or do a 5 speed swap with nothing less than a stage 3 clutch to handle the torque. then after that if you still have cheddah and the *****, go into the turbo project. i had a lot of extra stuff added to my set up like 3" race cat and 3" dual exhaust w/ flex pipe, Blitz power meter, custom end tanks on my gtr34 intercooler, beefed up cross member, ceramic coated manifold so my price that i paid is much higher. if you want small power get a V2 with a stock pulley and call it a night. if you want to play with the big dogs take a loan out or "acquire" those funds.

just for your info this is what my infiniti has:

custom built Turbonetics big shaft t3/t4 turbo
delta wastegate 6psi spring
hks ssqv bov
weapon r fpr
blitz sbc id II
blitz power meter
safc2
walbro 255
300zxtt injectors
boost/fuel press guages
hks turbo timer
gtr34 skyline core with custom end tanks
ceramic coated reversed Y pipe exhaust manifold
mobiltek VB upgrade
b & m tranny cooler
aluminum battery relocation kit
custom dual 3" magnaflow turbo back exhuast with a 3" high flow cat
beefed up crossmember

and the cartech fmu and egt is on order

The $300 being that...what is it, electronic? I'd probably be going the cheaper analog route, but...I know that isn't nearly as accurate. But then again, do I really need perfect accuracy at that low of boost?

thanks for all the input! I know to have a nice, large hp making turbo kit it costs 4k+ but I was just thinking of the 1.8t and other stock factory turbos that are small are probably relatively cheap....I know drew is selling his supercharger for 1700 which I would jump on if i had the money right now, but I dont and I am sure its going to go before I could save enough money! So I am just imagining what else i might be able to do with 2k in the future...Could someone list all of the NECESSARY parts needed to get a turbo running? I dont mean like 3" exhaust, intercooler etc...things that are upgrades to make more hp.....just the bare minimum....I have seen rebuilt turbo's for less than 500...here is what I know I need. please add whatever else you all feel is absolutely necessary to my list! please indulge this fantasy....

1. turbo-used/rebuilt
2. custom piping
3. BOV
4. turbo timer
??

aight this is what you need:

turbo- .60 a/r compressor & .76 on the turbine side
something like a t04B (cheap as f*ck) ebay it, good luck though $250
exhaust manifold- this can be a custom job (i paid $600) or maybe you can get it from HLH
down pipe- try to get this from hlh too $300
bov with flange- ebay $150
turbo timer- get this if you dont want to wait for your turbo to spool down.ebay $100
boost guage- this is needed for any custom turbo kit. ebay $20
fuel pump- walbro 255lph.ebay$115
some sort of fmu- vortech or cartech.ebay $120
tial wastegate with flange-no more than 4psi without the intercooler.ebay $150
spark plugs-1 step colder ngk bkrge $6 each
installation-???? any where from $500 to a $1000

all the parts except for the down pipe, exhaust manifold, spark plugs, and the turbo timer are at used prices on ebay.

Ahhh yes...that makes sense By indiglow, do you mean that it literally glows...or do you mean the LED light that lights up the whole guage face? Because LED looks good...and I know I certainly wouldn't want to be trying to custom-install one if the guage didn't come with it...

hes a member on here his name is hlh0501 he builds turbo kits
http://www.fastmaxima.com/

that set up i said will get you on the road but it wont be reliable like a used sc at that price and you will spend more money in the long run. you can blow some thing because you dont have a constant fuel pressure thats where an adjustable fuel pressure regulator $140 comes into play. then you might blow your motor because you dont have any proper way to tell if something is off in your tuning for example fuel pressure gauge $60 new, EGT gauge kit $130. keep in mind also all those parts on ebay have shipping charges. and you have to dyno tune your ride at $50 an hour. dont get into this area without taking the extra steps man or youre gonna be hurting. how do you know that all those used parts are gonna hold up anyway, especially the turbo! you cannot run anymore than 4psi and i cant give you an accurate estimate without knowing what turbo your gonna use. that turbo price is for a POS turbo also man. oh yeah and say good bye to your stock clutch also a turbo worthy clutch costs $350 and a usual $500 install price.

i'm moving back east to VA Beach so i can be closer to home (NYC) and i hope you dont try to push that raggedy turbo kit by dinwitty its gonna be bad news for you. TEAM NITE SHIFT! baby......... just get the SC.

plenty of good NEW cheap turbos here at--> cheapturbo.com average price $500-600

and $50/hr for tuning?? where at?? quality a/f tuning will usually run $100+ per hour....plan for at least 2-4 hours

also don't confuse adjustable fuel pressure regulator with an boost referenced FMU, they ar TOTALLY different!

damn allright so obviously even for a "cheapened" turbo kit its going to cost mullah....I will probably go with the SC I just thought it would be nice to see what I could do with the same amount of money on the turbo end....obviously not anything close to the performance or reliability of a sc! So if you all dont mind me asking, what is the total cost of everyones separate tc kits?

You don't need all that stuff, they just want the best of everything, I feel you because I am trying to do my kit as cheap as possiable. You don't need a 3 inch exhaust you can always run it from the downpipe out the side of the car or you can run an electric cutout with your stock exhaust. Just keep looking, research alot and you should be fine. Just watch the boards because people come up with some great solutions on this board.
