Super Charger Intercooler

When I install a Supercharger it'll probablly need an intercooler ...
but I read in an article that intercoolers can create some internal drag causing a slight reduction in boost ... and can also cause an engine to run lean do to the denser air charge .. so is it necessary to install it??

Well anytime you have boost you are going to upgrade the fuel system so you will not have to worry about that. Most people on this board with superchargers do not have an intercooler but it is always better because less chance of detonation.

Most people on this board dont have them because of the amount of custom work needed. The only "reduction in boost" you will ever see using an intercooler would be the lag generated by not being able to pressurize the system as fast. You wont loose boost, and probably would not even be noticable only boosting 10 pounds, unless you had a VERY large intercooler (which would not even fit anyway).

Why is there so much custom work? You can run an intercooler with pipes or an aftercooler using soem of the supercharger pipes. I just think people don't want to spend the money. Aftercooler would be easier because of the way the supercharger is mounted but aftercoolers are much more expensive than intercoolers.

Nope it would have to be custom, I don't think stillen will come out with a supercharger either.

A SCed maxima w/CAI setup w/out a intercooler will pull on a maxima w/intercooler. Drove one w/intercooler. Dont know what happened to the pep?

There could be many factors effecting difference in speed, also was it the same size pulley.

3.25 pulley I use to have. The one I drove had a 2.87 pulley intercooled. Major loss of torque. Now a SCed maxima with CAI and JWT 7200RPM rev limiter and MEVI, would have walked me. I am going to a supercharger set up again. Except this time it will be w/a 3.125 pulley

Maybe because of more piping, I don't know. The difference between incoming air between the cold-air intake and having the filter inside can be no more than 25 degrees. Having an intercooler can lower the temperature almost 250 degrees. Less chance of detonation, having a motor for a lot longer.

You have a 3.5 Liter. Somebody used a supercharger from a Pontiac GTP and has a custom mounting bracket made. His car got totalled so he never got all the kinks out. I think he spent less than 2500. I always see those superchargers on ebay for less than 500 dollars. All the custom stuff is what makes the cost go up. You would have to find a repitable shop in your area who would actually take the challange to fabracate everything.

Interesting - since my temp measurement boosting 8PSI was only 160 degrees. So you're saying if I go Intercooler I will drop my intake temp to -90 degrees! Wooohooo!...It's almost like having constant Nitrous!

That's why I've never gone Intercooler. The SC doesn't make enough heat to warrant it in any serious manner. A Water/Alcohol Injection setup is far cheaper and far more effective. After doing some temp readings and talking to Jay25 about the Intercooled car he drove (and he knows his stuff) - I am convinced it's not worth it.

My view is that Intercoolers are like BOV's on SC'ed Maxes - Neat to look at but they really aren't any better than the stock setup. (And in the case of the Intercooler - probably worse because of the bends)

Now - on a Turbo, which has far more heat - THAT needs an Intercooler.

I meant up to 250 degrees. Anyway I was saying that an aftercooler would be better in the situation.

hmmmm great i just got kicked down with an intercooler. i relocated the battery and eveything then i see this thread.

i was gonna end up with a 2.87, mevi , port n polished head.

but it seems like the intercooler does more damage then good.

I want to see someone Dyno without an Intercooler, then do nothing else but add an Intercooler, then run again - wrighting down peak boost measurements along the way.

hands down you will lose boost w/ intercooler.. no need to dyno..
dyno will also be affected by:

year or car (weight)
size of pulley
exhaust
lightened flywheel
etc

there are many factors .. but the way it works is it will lose boost with intercooler.

If you are worried about detonation then buy a J and S.

Intercooler on SCer isn't the same as Turbo..
People I know that had them removed them. Just my .02.

You WILL lose boost with a FMIC with the SC setup... we have no way of "easily" compensating for the boost lose due to the many 90 degree bends necessary for running it to the front of the car.... That's why I gave the FMIC to my brother and bought a Spearco #231 AWIC (yet to be installed). There's should only be about 1/2 psi drop at most. If you aren't running over 10psi... it would be a waste... I may have to move from my 3.12 to 2.87"... BTW I don't get any knocking now with my 3.12" ... I don't feel any nor does the J&S sense any.

Frank, you can still use an AWIC cuz you still need to relocate the battery.... see below:

Hey... my car is a daily driver... It's NOT for SHOW! Otherwise I'd have to go get some NEONS!

Phoenix you can get an intercooler like this. All you have to do is cut the piping and stick this in. You will also have to get some sort of pump.

You need to find a used V1 or V2 supercharger cheap. They are a dime a dozen if you check over in some mustang forums. Make sure they used synthetic oil and it does not have that many miles on it. If you find it cheap enough just go ahead and get it rebuilt. You will have to get someone to make an adapter plate to hold the supercharger up, that will be the hard because you will have to find someone who will actually do that. Then the piping is no problem. Then the other things that come along with it oil lines, couplers, fuel management, gauges, ect.

Better get the LARGEST one... those aren't too effective from what I hear...
They are probably very restrictive (Surface area is small) so you may lose boost and it also cause the charged air to move faster through the core (i.e. less cooling).
