Whats better, manual or auto turbo?
I have a auto 1998 I30 and im getting a turbo this summer. Is it worth it to get the manual conversion or just stick with the auto. I do not want to change that many things over with my engine if it's not even gonna make a big difference, and I see on maxima.org alot of people with auto turbo's and I30's .
:o)

Someone correct me if I am wrong but, from my understanding, auto turbos are faster than stick shift turbos. This is because when you shift in a stick shift, you need to take your foot off the gas. There is this guy on the Supra forum who has a stick TT and an auto TT. He says his auto wins hands down everytime at the track.

no....they can be faster, but in genreal usually aren't(stock tranny v. stock tranny) if HP is same, 5spd with decent driver will win 99% of the time

built auto > manual
it will maintain full boost through a shift, not to mention shifting faster anyways. also you can build boost at the line w/out twostep or antilag (which is possible in a manual , just not easy and terrible on the clutch) and typically more consistent & perfect launches
now where you can find a good built auto tranny for the maxima? Don't know. Someone needs to talk SP into making a SP400 for the max haha
for fun driving, manual will always reign!

the blow off valve isnt just to make a cool sound its to help reduce the turbo despool between shifts
and of course i agree with the fact that a $$$well biult auto$$$ will beat a manual in a high hp car but i would never drive it because it would be
SO DA$M BORING TO DRIVE

Manual hands down until someone ***** a bullit proof tranny for our cars. People that play alot here on the org are manuals. What I mean by play is that they hang out on private property etc..making racing videos at night. Its true an auto vehicle has the advantage. I dont think that will apply for a maxima. Why would you want that heavy clunk of metal in the car. Any of you ever try to pick up an auto tranny ?
that **** is heavy! very heavy. I prefer a manual tranny with a Quaife or LSD over an auto tranny any day.

JUST WHAT IVE BEEN TRYING TO SAY ALL ALONG.. THANK YOU WELL PUT...
id like to see someone who knows HOW TO SHIFT A MANUAL AT THE TRACK and there are a few here that do, to run there car with the stick and then put a biult auto in and run it with that. i bet the numbers would be so close that it would be cheaper to add more hp to the car and keep it a stick than to biult a $3000 auto
i mean how much extra power would the manual need to make up for the slightly slower shifting probobly only 20 or 30 maybe even less than that

I believe he used NRH for parts as well. NRH is in Jessup, MD...build high quality, high performance transmissions. Do a search here on the .org (if you can) and look for their name. I might have a site saved somewhere about them. If so, I'll post the info...

I have an NRH Auto Tranny and will be boosting over 300whp by tomorrow and less just say this thing shifts effortlessly!!!! It Is Da Bomb!!!! The only down fall is the 3500 to 3700. price tag. It has full 100% posi Traction! The best thing is Rob warranties the tranny knowing full well that the thing is going to be beat on. as a matter of fact he wants you to beat on it.
AUTO TRANNIES OWN STICK ANYDAY!!!!!!

Silly question, but if I had a spare auto, I could just send it to Rob at NRH? I know shipping would cost, but that's no huge deal. I mean, he doesn't need the car for any of his work does he? And what is turnaround time?

Yeah, what he said. The price more than justifies what you get (both physically, and in the form of his warranty). This is the ultimate auto transmission for our Maximas...
