junkyard turbos

im currently making a custom turbo kit for my car in the cheapest way possible so i can run low amounts of boost just to hold me off until i can get my hands on something larger. im not interested in creating massive amounts of power, i just want to have a turbo on the car so i dont have to deal with anything later on but upgrading the turbo (fuel and such as needed). my question is if anyone has any ideas on what kind of cars i can find an apporpriatly sized turbo to use on my car to acheive my simlple goal. i dont know which kind of cars to even look at because im sure there are many many old cars that came turbo that i wouldn't even think about. thanks a lot guys

84-86 300ZX Turbo. it has a small T3 but its a T3, meaning, you can upgrade in the future to a T3/T4 or T3/60-1 or just about whatever. The turbine a/r is very small for a 3 liter (.46 or so) but it gets the job done. I'm using one on my VG and its fun as hell. I know at 15 psi on the vg engine it put down 250 or so whp. I think the VQ should be able to use the turbo a bit better due to its superior breathing compared to the VG. You can pick them up for damn near nothing... like less than 100 bucks most of the time. If you take that route, get the 85-86 T3. They have water jackets for water cooling which is very good to use.

btw, you can delete your own thread by going to edit and clicking delete at the top of the page.

thanks for the info guys, keep it coming. ive been looking at the ct26 of the mk3 supras. apparently they can flow enough air for upwards of 300hp on those 3 litre motors and many people change the compressor wheels to get upwards of 400. anyone know much about these turbos? anyways, im still open to any suggestions...

i hear ct26's are very sweet turbos. you can get them upgraded as well to higher standards. probably the only downside would be is it more than likely uses some custom style flanges which might be hard to find. not sure though

How much do you think that getting it done will cost since I am an infant to welding?

i'd go with mig. tig looks good but mig has much better penetration and is just all around easier to use. if you spend the time you can make mig welds look good but there's really no point unless you'll be showing off your engine bay for car shows. my 2 cents

i was under the impression that it was not wise to use mig welds on manifolds. if that is not the case then im going to be quite the happy man...
