need some help with a map

sorry, this isn't maxima related but it is nissan related

now, i read somewhere that the dotted line is the surge line and you don't want to be to the left of it. however... this "surge line" according to this map seems absolutely terrible. does the surge line actually occur at the very left line or is it indeed the dotted line(s)?

That's the lug line...NOT surge line.

Surge line is the FAR left most line of either of those two maps.

ahh, ok. that makes a lot more sense now. the turbo mustangs site said dotted line which threw me off as i had always thought it was the left most line. now that map looks a whole lot better.

btw, this is for a 4.5 liter, 32 valve dohc, v8. (infiniti VH45DE)
the ray hall turbocharger calculator says that should be pretty good for the power i'm looking to pull. and taking a look at the compressor maps it seems to be a pretty good match but now that i finally understand this map a bit better i'll throw some more numbers together to find out. it may still be a bit big but i'm not sure yet.

i'm looking to get the gt30 for the max. looks like the gt30 should be pretty good up to about 20 psi on the vg and the ray hall site concurs on using the gt30.

Okay...I was thinking 3L Max...not VK45DE.

GT30R is good choice for the 3L, but GT35R might be better depending on HP levels.

yeah, i was taking a look at the GT35R as well. i think the GT30 should handle up to about 600 hp (according to ray hall) which is about what i'm aiming at with the internals i'll be using (gotta think about the tranny though as that thing is lucky to hold the power of the starter cranking the engine ). i'm sure pushing that kind of power out of a GT30 will put it very close to its limits so the GT35 might be a better choice up that high... if i even take it that high. that'd be going to where no maxima has gone before, to my knowledge.

as for the V8, i'm sticking a VH45DE into a 75 280Z and definitely wouldn't be able to live without boost. its too addicting and fun.

The GT30R can flow enough air for around 500-525bhp, however that's only at ~23.5psi.

The GT35R can flow enough for ~560bhp at a more feasable 14.7psi.

I think the 2% bump in efficiency of the 35R turbine will offset the larger/heavier compressor wheels' lag somewhat. Plus, I like the 35Rs surge region better for low boost.

All I need is typical VEs for a 4th gen, 4th gen w/MEVI, and a 5th gen ALL with intake/exhaust to help decide which is better.

Yeah, $1395 + ~$100 for all the oil/water goodies needed. Plus, the flanges.
