Grand National IC conversion.

Got the stock GN intercooler cut and welded up now. Also modified the stock up elbow to the throttle body to accept piping coming from the pass. side. The elbow is nice but I'm kinda worried it'll shove too much air in the one side of the throttle body. I'll put it on and put in a new set of plugs and read them after a pass.(see if that bank is leaning out) If someone want's to duplicate this IC and TB let me know they'd have 75-120.00 in a used IC core and 100.00 in welding (*both IC&Elbow*)
MtCookson's hosting the pic's {Thanks for the millionth time}
~Scott

I'll post pic's of the Rebar Mods and bumper cover mods when I do them this week.

i've got to say, i've been reading about your car and excellent job! i still cant believe you're doing all this on stock fuel and such high mileage.
its too bad you werent closer, i'd beg you to make my manifolds instead of doing it myself (i'm not what one could call very skilled in fabrication).
keep the pics comin' and get to the dyno

Fabrication.

I can't believe it worked the first time I drove it as well. The engine realy is in good shape on the inside. When I had the oil pan off I could still see the crosshatch pattern on the bottoms of the cyl walls.

I do have a parts car that I bought for 300.00 from a local car dealer (suckers)
Anyway. It's a automatic but that would not realy affect the way the way the pipes from the manifold to the turbo are mounted or routed. I've got a detailed parts list that you'd need which is prity basic. Now that I've done it once the second time's a breeze.
So let me know if you want it fabricated it's not a problem it'll be a bolt in and go deal.
You can e-mail me anytime and I'll give you a run down of the parts needed to do it.
Just orderd the following parts:
Aeromotive adjustable FP regulator
0-60 FP gauge
2.5" Super Turbo Muffler. (gave up on modding my stock one.. too loud)
I sent Mtcookson mail this morning so He'll get the pic's up here when he gets some time.
(thanks again)

all looks good but you really need to think about getting the fuel system straightened out

in GN turms your maximas stock injectors are around 19lb which are really way to small for 8psi of boost so you need to do somthing about those

have thought about just installing a vortec fmu like this one

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...929229164&rd=1

it would take care of your lean condition and proboly alow you to go to maybe 10psi boost on stock injectors

What that's doing is making the fuel pressure rise more than 1-1 correct? I'd do that if I wanted a temp. fix for my fuel related issues. I am going to use the Romulator and Live Edit. Where I can change all fuel and timing curves. 370cc Inj. are on the way along with a Aeromotive adj. FPR and a gauge.
Thanks again for hosting the pic's and helping me get them on here!

i thought you said you welded two of the gn intercoolers together? do you have any pictures of that cause i plan on welding a pair of ic's together as well if the cost to effectiveness ratio deems to be better than getting a brand new one.

Yes we did weld two stock GN IC's together with 3" inlet/oulet configuration. It's in the process of being installed on a 87 LX mustang with a 3.8L Buick powerplant. I'll snap some pic's of that so you can see what that looks like too.
The stock GN intercooler with no mods effectivly cools 350hp. With good inlet/outlets it's over 400hp. one like the one picured above is enough and the cores flow great.
Two would support 500-600hp easy.
Thanks for your input guys..

those things seem like they'd be a bit harsh on injectors. with properly sized injectors you shouldn't need to run such high fuel pressure.

for instance, if you ran a 4:1 disk and were boosting at 10 psi, that's an additional 40 psi of fuel pressure, on top of the 43 psi at wot. 83 psi of fuel pressure is starting to get pretty crazy imo.

it does work pretty well for small injectors but i'd rather not push an injector too hard like that. that's all my opinion though... i'm sure others might think differently.

Putting it out where the stock rebar (crash bar) is right in back of the bumper cover. Proably have to remove and epoxy alot on the stock front cover but it's nothing I have not done before. Did some mocking up today. Hopfully be able to keep my stock fog lights. going to be a tight fit.. that much is for sure.

Sent Mtcookson pic's of the double GN IC too.

I got impatient today... I'm intercooled!!! Sending Mark the pic's tonight before I go to bed.. took me the better part of the morning but it's prity much done. Lost just about a pound of boost with all the piping and cooler. Not bad. Inlet temps majior drop. See pic's going to work out nice...

Thanks again.. for all you help me with Mark. Realy appreciate it.
The pic's with the bumper cover off: the steel that's welded on the passenger side will be duplicated on the drivers side. Ran out of time. Need to get it all welded up then take it all back apart and paint it. I'm going to re-attatch the bottom of the bumper cover which will be directly attatched to the bottom of the IC. Along with opening up some more area there in the middle of the cover where a lic. plate would normaly go. I talked to John Craig at Limit Eng. in AZ. (turbo builder) Going to replace the stock turbo with a TA49. Supports 550hp works great on the GNs. We'll see how it does on the 4DSC.
Thanks again Mark.. and all for your support.

Mad Max, I e-mailed John Crag at www.limitengineering.com and asked for the info for ya. also downloaded the info from garrett too. send you that asap.

Silver: The elbow to the throttle body? Which direction would you like it to point? Drivers side or Pass. side? I have a extra core here that I can cut and have welded. Eather direction should work. Making that bottom bolt work is going to be tough. I don't have one in mine right now and it's not leaking just useing RTV. Did not have a gasket at the time. I'd proably have 50-60.00 in doing it. I'd need you to send me your stock one back after you recieve it so I can eather do it for some one else or put it back on the parts car I have.
SuBS... I'm spending some money now. FPR is here along with a super turbo muffler which is MUCH quieter than my stock muffler experiment. Injectors are next and seting up that Romulator and Live Edit. Stock replacement turbo is 400.00 and TA 49 is 650.00. just to let you know.
Mark: Have to wait on the Vids... once I actualy get fuel to it and start tuning that clutch is going to need replacing (AGAIN) Guess the stock replacement pressure plate can only handle so much.
Hopfully Mark and I can get together some time this spring out in KS. That'd be fun~
Thanks guys.. Scott~

Spraying...

Ok.. ok.. how much of a shot? Sounds like fun.. I've got to convince my wife that there's more room in my Maxima than in her Blazer. Humm.. Any ideas there? By Chrismas I'll have all the stuff worked out on the car including a good clutch/press. plate which is needed now with only 7-8psi!
This clutch is only 3-4months old! boost comes up and it slips
Especialy when you let out too fast and get back on the throttle. Kinda gota eeeze into the throttle and it still breaks the tires loose when boost hits.
I'd definaly say the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler is quiet and flows great. I've used them on my small block stuff with great success but was unsure how it'd sound on this car. I'm happy! Sounds almost stock!
Adjustable FPR is going on tomorrow.. More fuell will definatly get is Moooooving. let you know how that gos tomorrow

Thanks Denset... It's a work in progress.. I'll give it a cleaning once I get it all working the way I want.
Subs: Sounds good.. Let me get the injectors on and the TA 49 inplace.
I installed the FPR today. To make the car run better i've gota have a min of 50psi of fuel press at idle! Not sure where it go's with 7psi of boost.. proably around 75psi. DOH!

should only go to about 62 psi fuel pressure. between idle and no vacuum there is about a 5 psi difference in fuel stock (~38 psi -> 43 psi) then adding the 7 lbs. boost on a 1:1 ratio fpr should add 7 psi of fuel pressure and get you the 62 psi fuel pressure. either way, it works.

Man I can't wait till that TA 49 Comes in! It's finaly starting to do what I want. It's even starting to sound like a GN.. Humm.. interesting.
Thanks for posting the pic's for me Mark!
It's not that dirty is it? Just turned 196,000 yesterday. Got over 2000mi on the boost juice.. all's good so far. Oil's still clean changed it today. 370's on the way. Not much left till I can see double digit boost numbers.
