bearings and SC...

im not totally clear on the deal with our differential bearing failure problem. Will it happen on every car eventually or do you have to get a defective car in the first place? Will getting a SC cause it to fail? Is it one of those things that will happen evetually no matter what you do?

is the bearing problem a defect only present on some of our cars, or is it present on all of them?

I have 1996 SE 5 spd. Looking to SC as soon as I have the money (few mos.)

edit: oh yeah, have 120 k miles on it if it matters

Hes talking about the differntial carriar bearings in the 5spd trannys...if you have shaft play or Oil leaking out of the case then your bearings are bad. Getting a S/C will speed of process of cooking them faster but if they were shimmed properly from the factory, your fine. At 120, if they were bad, then they would have showed some signs by now of pre-failure...(Slight Leak, Drivers side axle play)

whew, I think im alright then. Don't notice any leaking but I havent checked for play. I am the 3rd owner, so the problem may have been fixed in the past. Only thing I notice is slight whining in the lower gears, but im pretty sure this is normal. If anyone has one or knows of one, im looking for a used turbo/sc kit, I should have the dough for it in a couple mos.

When the whine starts to creep up in 3th-4th gear then get yourself ready for a rebuild or a replace...your probably fine..

NO..if your going to crack the tranny open to re-shim the bearings and pay for the labor to have the entire thing taken apart and reshimmed...you would spend the 200 or so on New bearings..you dont reshim old bearings...to have the thing cracked open to check is even alot
Preload is set when the case is Put back together
