Deburring, shot-peening, and cryo treating what tranny parts?

I know Mardi deburred his gear(s) himself, but where would you send parts to get this done and shot-peened? What other tranny parts are crucial?

I'm planning on sending my brake rotors, differential, and spare tranny parts(gears and synchros only?) to these guys, since I've read about them and they're semi-close to reduce shipping costs: http://www.cryoscience.com/auto/index.htm.

Anyone else recommended for this type of work? Any one stop shop kind of places that do all three, so I don't have to ship things all over the US?

I've also read about these guys: http://www.300below.com/site/home.html.

Any opinions/advice/experience?

www.teamrip.com

They are local to me, owners and principal tech lives within like a mile of me actually. They are THE premier DSM transmission builder. David Buschur was at their shop picking up some parts from them a couple weeks ago, I think Shepherd uses their parts too (but assembles them himself). They've got their transmissions in 8 and 9 second cars. I am having them go through my new AE LSD when money allows.

What is there approx cost to do all the associated parts? Or a rough estimate...

On a maxima? I've got no idea. On one hand transmissions are transmissions, but on the other hand they probably can't or don't have time to do alot of the custom stuff which they routinely do on DSMs. I haven't talked price with them yet. They do have the prices of what they do for the DSM trans' and a few other trans' on there.

i just emailed 300below to see pricing especially since there only 150miles away it would proboly be cheaper for me to delever the parts than to ship them but we will see

when i do this im not even going to worry about the shot peening, i think freezing them will help more than enouf and as far as beburing id proboly just look all the gears over to make sure there are no "burs" and remove them with a file or grinder but even that is proboly not totaly nessasari since these are used gears they should be pretty smooth

Deburr, cryo then shotpeen.

Cryo w/o shotpeening is a supposed to be bad. Cryo does make thinks a bit more brittle. The shotpeenng shores up the surface are again so it wont chip or let cracks start.

I have a scan off an article from Turbo that I used as my guide. I would be gladd to send it to some one for hosting.

Shep is amazing with his 8 second streetable DSM! I read an article by him explaining what exactly he does to his Shep racing trannies and it wasnt all that beefed up as I would have expected.. He noted that when he races he doesn't rev and drop, just for the reason of being easier on his tranny. Pretty interesting article, I will have to find it.

"I try and ease it out of the hole and sacrifice my 60-ft times to keep the car together," he says. I asked him if he ever just drops the clutch, and he replied with an emphatic "No." So far, his method seems to be working, with no reliability problems to speak of.

Here is what I have saved on my comp from a magazine in which Shep was in. My apologies I though it was idle launches, but he does ease on the launches. None the less unbelievable.

Yeah, AWD racers call slipping the clutch at 5000+rpms "easing it out of the hole".

I don't think any of the awd guys drop the clutch. Most of the dsm trans builders say that even with a $3000 fully built 5spd, a clutch drop is going to break it in a high power car.

talked to Bob Reed at 300below and he was a really nice guy. The load up the cyro machines every Tuesday and Friday so for those interested try getting the parts to them before one of those days. The pricing is $3.50 per pound which isn't bad at all. Just a FYI after talking to him today.

yup i got an email about 3 weeks ago with the same price and time quote and i havnt been able to find a cheaper price anywhere which is great plus the place is about 2 hours away from me so i think me a friend are going to make the trip (with 3 sets of trans "parts") should be cheaper than shipping

You guys dont feel comfortable enough to crack the tranny open and removing the gears off the shafts? Just a question?

I was suppose to do this to three trannies. The problem is that I have many things and I have not had a chance to to even put the 2nd tranny together from the 4 trannies that I have. One is a LSD tranny.

No I dont have extra shafts. Unless they are cracked then I d replace them. Gears and the shaft assembly are not cheap parts. Synchros are not as expensive.

From personal experience its easy to pull the gears off. Now to install them back on the shaft its a different story. You hear alot of crazy noises (crack and lump lump) making you worried if your breaking or even cracking stuff. I got a hydraulic press at the house and two gear pullers and thats what I use.

Do we have a good tranny build up thread? We really need a nice sticky with all the good info in it. This is prolly one of the best.

I just got my car back today. 3rd gear and some other gear were missing all the teeth. I took a pic with my cam phone, Ill have to share it hehe.

Well since Mishmosh was nice enough to give me a tranny, I want to start building up my spare tranny. I want a list/directions/etc on exactly what I need to have done. :> I do need to buy a new ring pinion gear.

I also remember seeing threads about gears from other cars working in ours??

Someone compose a nice sticky! Sorry if i missed it!

Here are some links from other threads:

Mardi: I am not sure if it was everything, but
will you post here exactly what gears you deburred, cryoed, and shot peened? Also note Alex's list....

Do all of them. If you are going to have the transmission apart, there's no sense in not going all the way with them.

OK sorry for the silly question.....

so the gears, shafts... basically my tranny shop would know what things I should get done right? Should I first do that magnaflux thing to make sure thre are no cracks invisible to the naked eye?

Maybe I'll just take it up to the team rip place you used? :> Except I will be sure to shot peen?

Anyone else agree we need a nice tranny sticky? Someone please use/edit my posts and make one. :>
Here are some threads I found on different gearing: (I think I decided to not pursue this although it would be nice to get better MPG, it does not appears to make a worthwhile difference...)

Tear the shafts down. Replace or reuse the syncros and balk rings, I reused because they all looked fine and the trans shifted ok before it broke, syncros and balkrings are $$$ too. Do all the gears and both shafts. Deburr and polish all the gear teeth/faces on the gears and the gears forged on the shafts and the ring gear. Cryo it all. The shotpeener will know what to hit and what to not. Be sure to use assembly lube when you reassemble it all so its not dry when you start it up.
