Maf location question (pics)
Ive seen a couple setups now and ive seen one situation where the maf is located here....
On this setup the maf is located in the air intake side of the turbo.
In this setup the maf is located before the TB.
I was wondering which setup is more efficient to run and why?

One is not necesarily more effecient than the other.
Before the turbo:
-safer on the maf as it is not under pressure
-normally requires BOV to be routed to release to the nonboosted side after MAF since it is releasing metered air. Emanage has a program to compensate.
-to a point will reduce accuracy and throttle response since it is sending the ECU older information since the air has a farther path to go through. Not a huge deal most of the time, the air is moving quite fast especially when boosted.
after turbo:
-MAF is under pressure, some MAFs are more sensitive than others. The 4th gen one seems to hold up. The 5th gen maf is somewhat more fragile. The Z32 MAF was before the turbo when it was on the Z but some have gotten it to work on the boosted side.
-Louder BOV sound since it can vent to atmosphere. Is placed after MAF.
The MAF needs to be placed within some distance of the turbo so the turbulence doesn't skew the readings.

If you put the MAF on the charge side, make sure there are no bends right before it, ideally you want as much straight piping before it as possible. This style provides better throttle response and I've heard it is easier to tune with. If the MAF is before the turbo, make sure it isnt near the compressor, otherwise you will get very bad readings. There is a wealth of info on this on the SR20 forums, just do a search for blow-through MAF.

you have to use a universal kit. There's no specific relocation kit made for the VE, or any maxima for that matter..

yes in the second picture the bov is before the maf, this way you have less problems when the car actually blows off, the engine isnt thinking that its getting more air than it really is. if you put it after the maf then the maf reads the air passing through it and thinks that it is making it all the way to the engine when in all reality its just dumping out after the maf.
