The weakest links of the vq

correct me if im wrong, but is it true that the most common weakest links of the vq are its headgaskets and rods? Im looking at achieving 300 to 350 hp at the wheels if i go turbo. Not really high but decent, and it would def be a fun car to drive. So if i got custom forged rods and a stronger headgasket, would the vq have a better chance of handleing that kind of power without breaking. Also, would getting a thicker headgasket be worth it to lower compression for boost, or is there another solution that i should be looking at? I saw the engine kit for the max on the import performance website and it would seem to be about 2500 for rods and the whole engine kit. Id rather not spend this kind of money and any decent and cheaper alternatives would be helpful. Thanks!

300-350 shouldnt be much of a concern on a stock VQ as long as you get a good tune....there are many guys on here over 300whp without "built" engines

300-350whp is not an issue with the vq motor. Do alittle research and you will see plenty of people here running those #'s. Get yourself that much power then worry about it. Vq motors are very reliable at 350 - 400 hp.

ok, thanks for the advice guys. that takes a little off my mind. Im planning on 350 at the wheels, tuning it well and well see how it goes from there. maybe later if i blow something ill get the engine rebuild kit and new rods and stuff and really crank her up. well see.

You can blow your motor with 200hp if you fck up your tuning. You can run 500whp and not have a problem if you have it tuned right. Don't concern yourself with the strength of the motor until you are looking at the 500+whp range. Concern yourself with having the proper tuning.

yeah, thats what im planning on. im gonna tune it on a dyno probably in portland or NH to make sure its tuned good and see how much hp i can get out of it without problems. If something blows, then ill just start replacing them with performance stuff.

Weakest parts in the motor are the Ring lands on the pistons - no questions asked.
