Dyno numbers

Max WHP 271.38 @ 5600
Max WTQ 276.81 @ 4500

Stock VG block and Heads with 173500 miles on it. 11 psi running Rich as hell, 10.0-10.5/1 afr. I know I know its rich but im waiting to get a bigger MAF to borrow my buddys wideband. Also i have the timing set at about 22-23 degrees in boost. Im guessing that if i leaned it out i could get almost 300 WHP on the same boost.

Ill post the Graph up as soon as i can scan it.

you bet... im aiming for around 400-450 to the wheels eventually on this same moter. if not more... tranny will be the weak link.

Thanks neal.

Im useing Live edit with a romulator on my stock ecu. ive wideband tuned it but i left it way to rich because i was scared. management works great... 30 mpg highway, 20 around town, 1 while boosting

Curve looks good. Can you raise the rev limiter with live edit? If your valvetrain and rod bolts, oil pump, etc, can take it, you should do it. You are still making good power up top.

I'm going to put your dyno curve in Cartest and see what it says for optimal shift points. I'll post back up when I have the results.

I don't think you can make those yahoo photos show because the the contain a valid image extension.

I saved it and hosted it for you.

Thanks neal, and thanks for hosting it to. i can raise the rev limiter but i dont know what i can rev this old 2 valve up to. bottom end can pobably handle 6500 no problem but im worried about the top end.

Does a 91 SE have the same gearing as a 92+ SE with the VE engine? I will look that up next I guess. Assuming it does, cartest is tellin me that you should shift at redline in 1st gear, however high you are willing to take it (6500, 7000, even 7500), then shift from 2nd to 3rd at 6700rpm, shift from 3rd to 4th at 6400, 4th to 5th at 6100. Remember this is using a 92+ SE gearing, I'm going to go try to find out if the 91 gearing is the same right now.

im really think it does... but i do not know for sure. i want to look into it and find out what people are reving stock VGs to. i would shift higher if its safe... i pulls like hell even at 6k rpms. Thanks for plugin it in.

Just found out that the 91 SE has the same gear ratios, but a taller differential. 3.65 diff vs 3.82 diff for a 92+ SE. I put this in and it doesn't change the shift points more than 10-20rpm, so still the shift points I listed above are best.

k... now it makes sense. my buddys VG maxima was faster than mine when we were both N/A in the top of the quarter mile. he has a 92 tranny swap.

I just tested the hypothetical 1/4 mile times with the different rev limiters, assuming a badass launch and the shift points I posted above.

With a 2.10 60' time on each, it's giving me this for 1/4 mile times:

6000rpm limiter: 13.47 @ 106
6500rpm limiter: 13.32 @ 107
6700rpm limiter: 13.30 @ 107
7000rpm limiter: 13.30 @ 107

So as you can see going from 6000 to 6500 would get you a good gain, around .15 seconds in the 1/4, but going any higher than that doesn't really do anyting for you. .02 seconds isn't really even worth mentioning since your runs will probably vary more than that each time you run from things just like wind, your shifting, etc. But a full .15 seconds is a great gain, if you feel it's safe for the motor.

Yeah it's showing about .1 second improvement for a stock VG using a 3.82 diff from a 92+ maxima rather than the 3.65 in the 1991's.

wow... you can do alot with that program, thats so cool. Im going to see if its safe to rev VGs to 6500....i think it might be. Also, yea he was always running about 1-1.5 tenths of a second faster than me in the quarter, he was always pulling away in the top of 3rd gear.

Decent numbers, congrats! Lean that thing out now and see what she'll do!

Edit: By the way, if you start cranking up the boost, watch your tranny. I damaged mine when my boost spiked (wastegate came disconnected) and it eventually blew up. Not to discourage you, but if your gears aren't any stronger than the VE ones don't be surprised.

Ya, the VG trannys arent any stronger than VE trannys. The only thing ill have going for me is the fact that i have a HUGE turbo. Therefore the power always comes on smooth and never hits hard. and i dont have an extremely tight clutch so in between shifts isnt to bad.. Still im worried about my 3rd and 4th gear.

The VG tranny is stronger than the VE? Realy? no wonder your having trouble Brad
Brad has been rebuilding trannys in his sleep for the last 3months!
I just thought it's been luck that's saved mine.

Well, my problem was that I overboosted just accelerating, I did shift, but not hard. The tranny blew up when I was just accelerating in 1st, no shifting involved. Shattered the small input shaft gear (the one thats molded into the shaft) and chipped my first main gear.

Sounds like you guys that keep breaking transmissions need to get one modified so you don't have to rebuild your transmission every weekend.

is third gen turbo guys have to figure out a good way to beef up our trannys... with the power that i would like to be pushing someday im definatly going to need it. That or i am going to change to a different tranny, with adapter plates and custom axles (if needed) the options are endless. Although im thinkin about the new 6 speed given that is tougher. dunno just a bunch of ideas.

Indeed. This spring I will be tackling this issue. As of now, I was thinking a cryo treatment and shot-peen would help quite a bit, along with a full rebuild. It shouldnt be too expensive with the gears already out of the case.

Don't bother doing anything to the trans unless you get the gears detailed, that's my opinion. That is the best thing you can do to the trans to make the gears stronger.

Check out the thread I posted a few weeks back describing in detail all I had done to my transmission it's all in there. It's probably a few pages back.
