New intercooler

I found this on ebay for $180, brand new. The price was low enough that I was willing to take a chance to see if a FMIC really helps supercharged setups.

This gives me an air temp at the throttle body that is only about 10 deg F higher than air going into the blower. I have been goosing it a bit since installing and I'm not getting any discernible loss of boost pressure at up to 5k rpm, but on my only attempt to take it up to redline last night a boost hose came off at about 6 krpm. (There's nothing like instantly losing 200 hp at high rpm to give you a scare.)

I will dyno probably in the third week in September to see if the FMIC gives a net positive gain in power.

Ohhh my, if this turns out to perform well I might be interested in what we discussed via PM a little bit sooner. That looks sick!

Very nice! Would be nice to have a definitive answer on the intercooler effectiveness for S/Ced cars that was done at least somewhat scientifically rather than seat of the pants.

Wow, thats pretty big. Did you need to do a lot of hacking to get it to fit?

hhmm it looks like its not gonna be used to its full potential because a lot of it is being blocked by your front bumper.....or am i wrong?

Not totally wrong, but it will have little effect.

It is about 50% exposed to air. I'm going to open up the two rectangular sections where the license plate used to be.

Exposure to air is more important in steady state conditions, such as all out high speed running on a test oval.

For occasional street fighting or quarter mile runs, the thermal inertia of the intercooler becomes more important and the amount of intercooler exposed to the air can be decreased without much effect. It just takes a little longer for the IC temp to get back down to ambient in between runs.

That **** is so big! I had one that size, but I thought I would've lost so much boost pressure going thru that thing so I sold it. I still want to see results tho! Good luck on the dyno.

Is that 24x12x3 or 3.5? Looks very nice and I hope it works for you.

Doesn't the removal of the front bumper support concern you though? I've always understood that part to be vital to the structural rigidity of the front end in an accident. Mine is removed as well but not by me, and I've been strongly considering getting a different intercooler to get my bumper support back, and I don't even drive the car very often. You drive your car every day don't you?

24x12x3

Yeah, I'm somewhat concerned, but I don't tailgate and after many years of motorcycle riding I have learned to watch out for the other guy.

-2psi.....J/K.

Now you just need some timing back...

Time for a water sprayer or better yet a C02 sprayer and maybe 400whp?!?!?

i wish u would go dyno sooner so we can know what difference it makes....do u still hit the same boost levels wit it?

I doubt it. The question is how much of a hit. I'll do another attempt at a run to redline while datalogging boost pressure and maf voltage some time this week. I have to remove the cat and put the test pipe back in, though.

i cant wait to hear your results about this. i have always believe that having a fmic with an boost setup is important. maybe a s/c makes most of its heat at redline but its still heat u could get rid of. i think when all said n done after u dyno u might see like 20whp from this setup

Sure looks good Stephen. Your engine still holding up well or planning on a 3.5 at some point?

Very nice!! I too, can't wait to see your dyno numbers, and how much boost you lost. How about some engine pics so we can see the routing of the pipes?

"This gives me an air temp at the throttle body that is only about 10 deg F higher than air going into the blower" How did you measure this?

^^^ You mean water to air. Well, good ol' Vortech decided to take their sweet old time shipping the two ice reservoirs I ordered back on 8/5/05. I finally got a tracking number and they're due tomorrow. Then the install begins!! Josh and I will start a thread and show our progress/results.

if you lose some, spray it w/a 25 wet shot to bump up you up. I think blu would benefit from this setup with that T-trim. I cant wait to see what the results are. It looks good Stephen!!!

I have a two-channel temperature gauge, with a probe at the blower inlet and a probe at just before the throttle body.

I have a VQ35 torn completely apart in my garage. It's going to be a little different than what other people are doing, though.

^^^Nice. Is it the Phantom Autometer intake temp. gauge? I've been eyeballing that gauge for a while now and thinking about getting one to see the before and after effects of the water/air aftercooler that Ptatohed and I are going to install.

It is an Autometer gauge, but not the Phantom. I think it is called Ultralite? I can't remember.

Looks good, I don't see how a setup wouldn't benefit unless they were boosting less than 4psi.

I have this crazy idea about running the AC evaporator lines through the intercooler.

Fords' new lightning does it...you'll need to disable your A/C cut under heavy load.

I've thought about this a lot, however with an AWIC and the evap submerged in the water.

i have thought about it too, but with my setup, it would be a little work intensive.

Plus we don't get as hot up here as y'all do, so its not as much of a problem.

11.81102" X 23.66205" X 2.9528"

Couldn't get any more exact than that with my tape measure.
