Advice wanted

Hi, I'm strongly considering purchasing MaximumHP's '99 SC'ed Max with 66K miles. The blower has been on for 16K, a Stillen V2. I know he has had to replace the belts once, but feels that they are good for a few more years. My question is how reliable should this car really be, do you think the belt shredding will be inevitable? And if so, how much expense am I looking at to replace? What happens if one snaps, any damage to the engine, and would it still be driveable? Sorry for all the newbie questions. Thanks in advance!

Is it automatic or manual?

The car should be plenty reliable if the owner properly took care of it and didn't drive it like a complete maniac.

Belt shredding only occurs on V2's with an upgraded pulley (smaller than stock). The stock supercharger pulley is a 3.6" good for around 6 to 7 psi. The whole reason for belt shredding is because with a smaller pulley, the belt rubs itself against one of the nubs on the mounting plate. You can modify (shave) down that nub so that there's more clearance.

Should be about 1.5 to 2 hours of shop labor to replace the belt, plus the cost of the belt (around 40 dollars).

If the serpentine belt snaps, the only bad thing is that your alternator won't be charging your battery anymore, so you'll have to get to the nearest shop QUICK and change out that belt or else the battery will completely drain and you'll be stuck where ever you are. You'll be able to drive until the battery drains out, so don't use any electrical accessories (A/C, fan, radio, blinkers, windows, whatever).

I know maximumHP, I got to see his car when he came down to help with my turbo install. It is a very nice car. You just don't see 99's modded like that. Getting to work with him for a day on a FI project I can tell you that I wouldn't have any worries about the quality of his mod's. His car is done very nicely.
