Independent oil circulatory system; Possible?
Independent oil circulatory system; Possible?
I've been playing around with the idea of a rear-mount turbo but have been skeptical on starting because of the oil situation for the turbo. Just all those lines, extra pumps, wires.. not very promising. So I thought up the idea.. why not create a second source of oil for the turbo OUTSIDE of the engine? Like a metallic catch-can (much larger though) full of oil, with a pump to keep the oil moving through the turbo, then back into the can to be recirculated? Could this be possible, or does the turbo require a certain pressure of oil?

This would be a good idea even just to cut down on the amount of lines you would need to run, as well as keeping most of the lines away from the bottom of the car where something could happen to them. I like it.
Now, if you think about it, even if the turbo requires a certain amount of pressure in the oil, you ARE using a pump, aren't you?
I can't answer the question for sure, as I don't consider myself knowledgeable enough about oil and turbo lubrication, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Of course a pump will have to be used to keep the oil moving around. Lol, just having the supply to oil isn't going to be enough. But yes, I really can't see why it wouldn't be possible. Just going to wait for more feedback before I actually start working on it.
