Turbo VQ35DE engine??

Has anyone done a turbo VQ35DE successfully?

If so did you buy a kit or did you piece it together yourself?

If you bought a kit where from?

Also what turbo are you running?

Does it all fit nicely without any problems?

Any tips would be helpful as I am looking to go turbo and i was thinking of doing the VQ35DE swap before and a 5 or 6 speed swap as well.

more or less. tuning issues with most of the ppl who go turbo on the 3.5
If so did you buy a kit or did you piece it together yourself?
custom fabrication only, no kits available
If you bought a kit where from?
no kit
Also what turbo are you running?
most ppl run t3/t4 or hybrid
Does it all fit nicely without any problems?
either relocate the battery, rear mounted turbo, or run the turbo underneath the manual* transmission (not much space for a turbo wtih auto)

come to think of it, whats stoping us from using the 350z single turbo kit? Its the same engine.....i wonder if clearance is the issue here. Can anyone chime in?

i am currently doing a 3.5 swap and i have a PFI turbo kit and it will fit the same as it would fit on a 3.0 motor. as far as the tranny for the 5speed it would be the same but the 6speed i dont know but i will let you know when and if i do a 6speed conversion. and i am going to use the same turbo that i used on my 3.0 which was a to4e bb that came with my kit.

I would suppose it depends where the turbo ends up being mounted. With some minor changes in piping though maybe

Mardigras had a 3.5 turbo + nitrous.

Someone has that amazing 4.5 gen with a S/C and true dual exhaust.

I drove in Jim Wolf's 3 year old 350Z with the twin turbo kit he has finished
R & D ing and is waiting for CARB certification.

This Z car with just a cold air intake and twin turbos is very fast with loads of torque that drove me back into the seat!

nismomaxct sent me a pm and said that if i did the VQ35 swap he asked me if i would be the template for the piping to make sure it fit in nicely.

So it is possible but the hard part is getting the actual turbo in there, sounds like fun . Well i think i gotta go find me a VQ35 and get this piping template with nismomaxct going.

For the ones that have done a turbo on 3.5 how much horsepower are they making (without nos if they have)?

Why post it? Because its one of the first VQ35 turbo 4th gen's. (from what I remember reading about it when it was posted the first time, could be wrong :meh: )

I dont know why you guys are like omgzorz I cant fit a turbo on my VQ35 (thats not in a 5th+ gen) because its almost the exact same as a VQ30 setup.

Fab it up toss it on tune it, just like any other NA car.

Tilley had a turbo 3.5/6-speed in a 4th gen before 3.5 swaps were really even popular...

Just curious , why would you do a 6spd conversion ? If your going to make all that power , keep that powerband with 5spd , thats just my opinion...

wrong, the 6spd keeps the engine in the heart of the powerband much better than the 5spd ever did.

Thank you. If anything with the 3.5L in the bay you have a little more space than with the original 3.0 (arguable)

piping is the only thing (I would think) to stop many from boosting period, regardless of engine.

LOL, guess what guys. I know guys that even fit a damn JDM Nissan Gloria motor in their 4th gen Maxima. Grow up. People that REFUSE to post shyt in this forum because the arrogance, sarcasm, and they are tired of seeing "oh it is just impossible". And to my knowlege, the car's only major problem at this point is TRACTION. Do a 3.5 swap, run the piping and the turbo, and do it on your own. By the way, that VQ30DET JDM motor in the 4th gen, I WILL have pics of the setup within the next month or so. There are a LOT of off the wall, crazy, amazing setups done locally. People just don't post them up here or even log into this place. If the owner of the car feels like posting information about it...he will chime in here. At this point he is aware of this thread, i'm sure.

PS i'm not mad either, lol. Amazed that a turbo 3.5 still amazes some of you.

Meh 3.5 Turbo. Sure its crazy fast and you'll blow your tires out, but if you want strange go to grmotorsports.com. Yugos from hell (2.5L dodge driving the front 500CI driving the rears), clowns driving nissan powered minis, etc.

Any way thats OT. The question is have you seen any rwd or awd maximas yet?

Like MaxSE5Spd said, the 6spd tranny is geared MUCH better than the 5spd is. Longer 1st and 2nd are the best advantages, apart from the obvious 6th gas-saving gear that makes a nice addition. Not to mention the 6spd tranny is ALOT stronger and can handle the loads of a boosted 3.5 with no problem from what has been done so far.

Im not the kind to say that all 5spds are weak (that just happens to be the popular opinion since so many of them blow. But I think it has more to do with driving style and maintenance). My 12yo 5spd is handling my 3.5, the heavy wheels, and clutch dump without a sweat.

So in the 5spd-6spd debate, the slight extra weight and slight extra drivetrain loss are negligeable compared to the benefits it provides.

And a turbo 3.5? BAHAHAH I dont believez........

Key phrase "(thats not in a 5th+ gen)". Most of us that are asking are people that own 5.5 and 6th Gens. Who cares if you transplanted a VQ35 into a 4th Gen.

We want to know what will work with our cars.

And I'm not about to "tinker" and "fab" up something on my car. Not willing to be without a car for days, weeks and months and not really knowing if it's going to work or if I'm going to destroy something. And who wants piece-meal a turbo kit anyway? I guess we feel like we should get the same aftermarket support as the G35s coupes and 350zs get.

Again, not really mad, just venting.

well for some people, making something work is just as fun as is enjoying the part you installed. Especially when you dont have the money laying around to buy a kit. Its very fun and more rewarding to have put extra work into making something work and beat the guy that spent 3 times as much money on the same thing.

They may be true when I used to run RC cars but we're talking about my mode of transportation here.

Furthermore, I'm not willing to junk up my 2 car garage to the point that it becomes a 1 car garage. The other side of the garage is filled with wheels and bumpers and all the other stuff you have to remove to "fab" a turbo.

1. No diffy bearing or input shaft bearing issues.
2. Gears are stronger out of the box.
3. Inexpensive HLSD option FTMFW
4. Actually puts down more torque in every gear despite the higher drivetrain loss due to more torque multiplication via gearing.

I tried to tell these "know-it-alls" on this forum. You cant post a pic here without them wanting to know the parts used from A-Z. We might know the owners, the parts used, and the process but that really isn't our business to tell their info. Out here in NY, we can go in a corner store and come back outside and all our hard work and money b gone into the hands of a thief. Not to mention, a lot of people spend lots of time putting their whips together to their taste and no one wants to see their same exact setup bcuz they spoon fed someone. As told in the post about the JDM VQ30DET swap, people don't show there setups because they have sunk a lot of money in them and would like to keep them from thieves. I am sure there are some custom 02-03 turbos out there. There are no kits available for 02-03 Maximas.
