SC help!

I've just got a Stillen V2 SC installed in my 98 Maxima. Soon i've noticed that there's a rattling sound coming from the charger when the car is in idle. Specifically, it's coming from the intake side of the charger.

It sounds like steadily rolling a rock in a can. The strange thing is that the sound does not start until AFTER the engine is warmed up. Also the sounds is not there when i step on the gas pedal, but it might just be the noise of the engine muffling that sound.

Can anyone offer me any explanation as to what that might be? That sound is preventing me from enjoying my new SC.

The charger was just recently been through major rebuild by vortech. I'll check on the pulley and update this post.

Thanks everyone.

Check to see if the drive pulley is loose. That'll cause the marbles-in-a-can noise.

I talked to Vortec today because mine makes noise at idle as well and they said at idle you can here the backlashing of the gears, if the sound goes away when you press the gas it should be fine.

That's comforting but the problem is that I don't know if the sound goes away because it actually does go away or that the noise of the engine with the charger is masking it. I'm going to tighten the tensioner this weekend and see if that helps.

Step 1, take off the air filter and grab hold of the impeller. Can you move it back and forth and if so how much? If more then ever so slightly get a socket to fit (14mm) and what ever fits in the side where the pulley is to hold it steady while you attempt to tighten the impeller. If it is already tight and is getting no tighter make sure that you are holding the pulley steady on the blower while you are attempting this.If it is loose see step 2.

Step 2, You need to check and see if your pulley on the blower is becoming stripped out. What I mean by this is that the key that slides in that notch located on the shaft of the blower and in the little slot on the pulley is getting larger either in the pulley or in the shaft. Either way if you see 1 or both wearing you have issues most likely related to the bearings going bad. To see this you will most likely have to remove the blower and unloosen the bolt that holds the washer on to see what your working with. Another sign is if you see an orangish colored looking dust arount the blower and on the pulley. That would be the evidence of that key(the little rectangular piece of metal that slides in there decintigrating! The easiest way is step 3

Step 3, loosen the belt so that you can move it out of the way. Check the play between the pulley on the blower and the impeller blade, if more than just the slightest bit of play is evident then your junk is F'd Been there done that many times!!
