VQ35 Midmount Turbo...

Well, I figured I would start my build thread towards the end of my build... as I know that from this point, there is no going back, so I can't feel the effects of the org curse of telling people about a project and it never happening...

Lets hope I am far enough along...

Until the build is completed, I will supply everyone with Pictures and any questions answered that I can answer for the time being...

As of this moment, for those that car, we are sitting with Transmission Problems and though the Turbo Project is still highly on our agenda, Getting my car running right is Top Priority before we stick any type of F/I on it...

Here are a few pictures of parts that have been waiting for a good 6 months to be used...







And for some laughs... this was our first plan for the IC... which is no longer a plan.. but it was a really big though, and the main reason for the purchase of that Intercooler, though it will work fine in our current setup...



Any questions about the setup just ask, I have more detailed pictures regarding location etc... but that will have to come at another time...

We found a nice little pancake filter that'll be right on the turbo from K&N, I believe it was. I'll try to find the part number, I saved it in Google Docs somewhere.

Well we've already mocked it up under there, surprisingly enough there's actually a decent amount of clearance around the turbo.

Shorter charge piping, exhaust piping into the turbo, oil lines, and a steal of a deal on a 3" catback, basically.

I'm sure there are some other reasons, but I've forgotten them already.

I believe it will look a lot better and is more concealed, also less piping to and from the turbo (oil, charge piping ect ect)

Also we already planned on trading exhausts with HNDA ETR (2.5" Cattman for 3" Cattman) and I am not going to hack up a prototype,

Also wanted to be able to remove the turbo very easily (making a test pipe to fit in the place in case we want to remove the turbo during winter ect)

There is no real added benefit, but at the same time, I wanted to be unique... and the RMT had already been done, and I originally wanted it to be in the "normal" location, under the hood, then noticed the amount of clearance we had under the car so we decided to go mid mount, unique in all ways..

have you tried test fitting it because with a turbo that big it might not fit there, seems like the diagram shows that itl be right under or really near the shifter. this is gonna be interesting.

It is going to fit about 6 inches before the shifter (towards engine)...

here is a picture of under the car so you can get a visual of where it will go (the spot where there is a ton of open room)

Basically right where the hang comes off the y-pipe (See Attached Image)

I had thought about that area before but after dragging my stock resonator on things when it was there made me really question the clearance. Are you going to modify the area at all or use a skidplate below the turbo?

Exhaust tunnel will remain untouched, for now. If we see that there's a clearance issue, we'll likely 'carefully' modify it with a BFH.

I was thinking louvred for heat dissipation, but as far as we can tell, this is going to sit just a hair higher than the lowest point of his Cattman y-pipe's skid plate...and that thing hasn't ever hit the ground while on the go. The skid plate will be more of a piece of mind sort of thing.

Not really, actually overall cost lessened. No need to fab up a forward or reverse Y, no need to move the battery, downpipe, etc. All we have to do is modify the cattman Y a little.

Maybe another two months...we've still got some parts to buy, then the piping and all needs to be done...we'll see I suppose. First we've got to take his trans back down, apparently there was an issue with the rebuild we did.

Something that I have not discussed with pmohr, as he has hijacked my thread....

I am thinking of getting another "cross member" that sits down by the exhaust, taking one of those and putting it below the turbo, I really do not think a skid plate is going to protect a turbo at all, if the skid plate hits, the force is going to be the same no matter what we do (if it is attached to the turbo)...

The cost is sitting right now at roughly $2600 spent, but that includes Engine Management (EU) and other pieces....

All in all, the setup should be very good once we get everything on the car.

We have already spent roughly 8 months on the project, sourcing parts and deciding on where things will go, figuring out problems with clearance etc etc. So far many problems have come to our attention but we also have worked around 100% of them, there is not a single issue that we do not have a fix for, so really it comes down to, as pmohr said, fixing the transmission, and getting money to source the rest of our parts and the labor to put the turbo in place.

I figured a BFH would be involved. Interested to see how this works for you guys, my biggest concern with under the car is the oil lines and debris/water. Keep pics coming if you guys don't mind!

We got this bad boy aligned and properly setup...





I am going for an interview with a local shop tomorrow that does work with G35 and 350z... hopefully being employed by them will allow me to get some nice deals on the remaining parts / labor...

Sup dude, well like we talked, i had told you it might not work, or it might be hard to get it to fit properly. If it fails you can always go to my setup =). However, i know ur going to have a hard time with a few things. Oil pump location and hoses to it hanging too low to the ground, piping, to and from the turbo, etc... Not saying its impossible because alot of poeple said my setup was impossible and useless, so keep it up and good luck mate..! peace
