Anyone have trouble with an axle popping out?

First the car-
V1 T-trim with a 3.25 pulley
Headers and full exhaust
5spd w/Quaife diff

I had been driving the car all day. I was in 2nd gear, about 3k RPM and I punched it. Got to about 4.5-5k RPM when something made a popping sound and the whole front end started to shake. First thoughts were -
A:blown tire
B:Busted an axle
When I let off the gas the front end was still wobling around. I pulled over, and the tires were fine, so I took a look under the car half expecting to see gear oil all over and/or part of an axle hanging down. Nothing. I took a look as best I could on the side of the road and couldn't find anything, so I started it back up and slowly started driving. Car drove fine. I drove the 2 miles home without incident, but I did not boost any further.

I haven't had a chance to get under the car, but I am thinking an axle issue. It felt like something was binding in the front end as I was coming to a stop. I had my brother in law in the car at the time, and he concured with what I was feeling. Anyone have an axle pop out and then go back in before? Perhaps a CV joint binding up? Both the axles are crappy autozone rebuilds, less than 2k miles on both.

Any thoughts or opinions?

i have. passenger side axle which doesn't have the snap ring on it, the bearing on the axle (the one that bolts to the bracket on the passenger side) failed and allowed the axle to slide out of the trans when turning to the left. didn't make any weird noises (because it didn't come all the way out of the trans), just left a trail of gear oil on my road and up my driveway.

Thanks Neal. It felt like it was coming from the passenger side. I'm going to try to check it out today, but I have to get the babies room painted first.
I was wary of the passenger side axle I replaced, but it was the only one in stock for 100 miles and I needed to replace it immediately. If that is the problem, hopefully it left some sort of sign (oil, warped seal, something).

On a side note, I drove my brother in law's basicaly stock maxima right before we took mine out. Holy ***** does mine get up and go! Raped ape doesn't half describe it. Can't wait to dyno after the EU goes in.
