Very nice and innovative, I do have questions above your "quick spool valve" I see the valve is removeable, how exactly is the valve constructed? Have you consider the expansion and contraction of the valve? How about condensation within the exhaust? It's not everyday you see an exhaust system having internal moving parts. A wastegate is a moving part of the exhaust system, but the meat and potatoes of the wastegate is not subjected to high heat exhaust flow.

The reason I'm asking is to consider and address all possibilities of the valve sticking.

You stated a starter solenoid will be used to open and close the valve at different rpm/loads. Have you consider designing the valve to be in the naturally closed position and use the starter solenoid to open the valve? Maybe you can keep the valve closed with a external spring.

Also, why the custom engine mounts? Was it a clearance issue?

One last question, who's pretty fingernail is this

Well, i do say that all of the quick spool valve is experimental. I have taken many steps in trying to make this valve as heat proof as i can. yea it would be nice to make the valve naturally open and have the solenoid force it open.. however there is not really a nice way of situation every thing so that there is good balance and flow. what i have done is install springs on the valve that bring it back to center and disable the diversion of exhaust. Also the valve it self and the surfaces that act as bearings are all made of a high temp high grade stainless, one that maintains corrosion resistance to nearly 1800 degrees. I used that metal in hopes that it would be able to withstand the temp while still remaining Free moving. We will see if it will work tomorrow.

o yea... and i went with custom engine mounts for the stiffness. to try and reduce wheel hop and what not. The increase in clearance is just one other benefit.

Awesome build thread, very impressive work. Sure beats a thread with a bunch of random new parts laying around.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone. i really appreciate it. Car drives great just have to work out some wastegate issues and she will be all good. Engine mounts are great, oil coolers great, New 2.5" thick radiators great, Chassis strengthening i did seem good. So.. Ill go more in depth about the valve another post.

Did you get the nistune board for your ecu? If not have you considered the M30/consult ecu for tuning?

not sure how you are opening the valve but what about this idea. hook to a toggle for the power but and test to see what rpms you get full boost then just simply set a rpm activated switch at those rpms and there ya go don't got to worry about opening or closing all done by itself. Some honda guys use these for there vtech solonoid to open it sooner to have vtech quicker. lol vtech!

Can't wait to see the HP/TQ curve on the dyno sheet for this!

PS- When do you get traction?

so is there any chance that members could send you spare xmembers and you could set them up with these sort of mounts? you could really just quit your dayjob and make a career out of this stuff. tho that might cut into girlfriend-time...

Who needs a girlfriend when you have a car like that?!

He is very good at fabrication. It's always cool to see the new ideas he comes up with and the crazy setups he builds.

Looking good Jerm. I'm glad you were able to finish in time for Honda meet, and I'm glad that everything held up this weekend -- The white cruise ship was the fastest car of the day on Saturday in the rain, out running all of the set-up honda track cars.

ionno dude i'd keep her around... girls that paint their nails 'unconventional' colors usually have more personality than girls that just go for basic red, or nothing.

but there may be enough demand here within the maxima world as a whole for him to actually start making and selling stuff...

She also TIG welds like a pro! Thats a keeper in my book.

EDIT: I bet she even did some of the welds in this build up.

subscribing to one of the org's best threads.

just another suggestion I thought up of quickly for the valve would be to have it closed normaly with a spring Like Candiman said, and then have a solenoild open it at a certain boost set-point. could you possibly control that with some vaccume system?

the valve is open under normal conditions for gas mileage purposes, then it closes between like 3 pounds of vacuum up to 10psi of boost, and then it opens again above that. those might not be his exact settings (his electrical engineer buddy made him a badass control box on which he can adjust those settings, so he might have played with them a little bit) but that's the basic jist of it. he doesn't want it closed all the time during normal cruising because it would hurt fuel economy bigtime.

I am curious as to why it would hurt fuel economy having the valve closed? valve being closed = exhaust being restricted causing poor millage?

Well.... it still runs Great. I road raced it shortly after i built it all and everything went great. Since then Ive been so busy i haven't really had much time to mess with it. I have just really enjoyed driving it. while i was road racing i think i cooked the valve actuator.. now it just blows fuses, so i haven't had that working for a few months. I am planing on designing a vacuum/boost diaphragm actuator to move it now. still using the electronic control box just having it switch a vacuum solenoid causing the valve to move. I WILL make the valve work again before the end of the season, and i WILL get to the track at least once.. and i WILL get on a dyno.

what did the boost do when the valve worked? things like:

valve working full boost at this rpm:
valve not working full boost at this rpm:
basically how much of a difference did it make? can i install a holset hx50/52/55s and expect to have boost before 24000 rpm on my 280zx?

I wish i could say i had an update on the valve.. but i sadly still haven't had any time to mess with it. Its still running great, and i upped the boost to 14 psi last night. 14 psi and 30 degrees out is quite fun. Hopefully once schools over in 2 weeks ill have some time to fix the valve actuator. As soon as i figure something out ill have an update.

Sorry.. wish i had one but.. middle of winter means no maxima for a few more months. hopefully i will get it out and build a new actuator before spring.
