I'm stuck on proceeding my turbo build which is a 4.5 5 speed I have all the turbo accessories except the feed pipes and down pipes the car is a lemon exterior beat up interior need revamped and the windows sunroof door locks don't work now I'm contemplating on getting another clean 4th gen and swapping my hybrid 3.5 and boosting it or should I get a 5.5 6 speed and boost that also this would be my daily. I WANT MY FELLOW ORGER OPINION! on which would be better to turbocharge like response time drive by wire vs cable driven? do drive by wire has a delay with boost ? does the 5.5 6 speed on boost feel as fast as a 4.5 on boost? please help me decide.

my motor went in my 96 so i junked it cause it needed work so i found a 97 CLEAN just needed a tranny it was an auto so i re things onverted to 5 speed. now im doing a 3.5 swap soon i got like a few more things i need to do and a few more thing i gotta learn about how to do the swap. then my next step is turboing like a month or so after. so my opion is 3.5 swap with a turbo. junk the car and find a clean max high miles so u get it cheap and swapp it

once you add up the cost to buy a 4gen do a 5spd and 3.5swap it would be cheaper and easier to just get a 5.5gen

me personally I'd rather boost the stock 3.0, I only like boosted 5.5gen cause it's different and not many people have them

5.5 gen. The 4th gen manual tranny...it's only a matter of time before a rebuild.

Piston/rod 5.5gen with the 6 speed.
The 5 speed trannys suck.

A 4th gen with a 3.0 and a 6 speed would be nice though!

essential anyway you go one way or another you are fcuked.

Are you buying a maxima just to turbo it? Because i think everybody in this thread would agree that's a pretty stupid idea.

I don't see anything wrong with boosting a maxima, infact there are a few in my area all making over 400hp on stock motors

I already have a 4th gen 3.5 5 speed that's running its just the body is raggedy and I have all the turbo parts and accessories except feed pipes and down pipes so im stuck on transferring over to a cleaner 4th gen or just get a 5.5 6 speed

Absolutely nothing is wrong with it, just the limited amount of support for doing these projects, unless its somebody like yourself who can essentially fab everything they need on their own......its tricky.

BTW You decent at tuning? PM me if so, everything has come along nicely.

If you have a 4th gen, just use the 4th gen. I would go 4th gen because they are more versatile then the 5th. My build was a swap from car to car, but i wouldn't go out and buy another car for this kind of project again unless it was a better platform.

If you really want to stick with a maxima, i would try and find a clean 95. no obdII inspection nonsense so you can run whatever engine management you want on it. The 5.5 gens use the 350Z stuff and i think they just got a full standalone from haltec working on both the Z/G and 1 maxima is running it iirc.

Personally I would get a clean 95 like stated and do a 6spd swap less you live in a non-emissions area if so than get a 5.5gen

Buy my maxima.

4th gen(96) with full complete 5.5 gen vq35 swap and 6spd and boost.

There are quite a few Maximas running Haltech systems now!

if op is dead set on maxima, and wants a insane turbo built 4th gen. 95 is the way to go forsure.

Boosted vq35, w 6spd, running full Haltech standalone. would be sweeet.

(unless you just bought shift max's car instead)

Kill 2 birds with one stone, get a busted 3.5. You'll have a block to machine if you ever decide to, as well as having the wheel and timing ring.

Exactly. I understand what crusher is saying though. If I had NO car and was deciding on buying a car to strickly boost it would not be a Maxima. I only boosted it because it was the car that I had in the first place and I did not buy it to boost initially. It was cheaper to boost my maxima than buy another car and start all over.

BTW 5.5 Gen 6-speeds under boost are BEASTS!! Mine is not too bad at all.

each has their advantages and disadvantages. lightweight vs more comfort. more plug n play (or close to it) engine management options vs less emissions considerations, etc.

You are correct......but where there is a will there is a way.

Terminal #55 (I think) on the ECU is the brake stop terminal. When your foot is off the brake its not sending a signal to the ECU and when you press your foot on the brake it sends a 5V signal to the ECU. I cut that wire and wired in a switch so that it works as normal when the switch is in the normal position. However when I want to brake boost I flip the switch and basically ground out that wire so the ECU never gets a signal that Im stepping on the brake......so I can brake boost! When Im done having fun then I just flip the switch back. Also when the switch is flipped and Im brake boosting the rear brake lights still function. Take that DBW!!!!

Shift Max what are you asking for your car?
