What's with the 97-99 SE rims?

There seem to be three types. The SE-L rims are that titanium color and are very cool, but my question really revolves around the other two.

There seem to be some rims that are painted with a gloss finish (this is what I have). They really shine when they are clean, waxed and in the sunshine. Then there are others that are not smooth at all, but rather are like a matte finish. I bought a rim off of Jime and it is this matte finish. My sister's 99SE has these rims too. Was it only in 99 that these were produced? Why would they make them matte? I think that's kinda fugly.

Am I missing something? Are the SE-L rims the matte finish to give them that titanium color? I don't get it.

Here's the link to another thread re: SE-L rims.

I've got the "titanium coated" SE-L that don't shine...the other rims that are nearly white, they almost look plastic!

You saw mine, I've got the matte-finish wheels and as far as I knew they were off a 98. I could be wrong though...

I don't think we're gonna find out for sure until someone talks Dave Burnette's ear off.

Well, they werent only produced in 99...mine have that nice glossy finish that looks hot when washed and im a 99. Maybe it was an option?! Or a factory error?! Who knows...It is odd though, thats for sure.

I dont like the titanium color SE-L rims, the just look dirty...

They wouldn't if everyone wasn't used to the normal color or if they had more shine like the AE wheels.

I have 2 97 Maxima's, one has the shiny and the other is matted. Might have switched vendors or specs.

Weasel,

Did you buy them from someon in Texas? I think that I am the one who sold them to you. If so, they are from a 98.

The titanium rims from the SE-L's look best on Maxima's that are Sterling Mist IMO. I have the SE rims, but mine are chrome.

Yeah, that's me. Still happy with 'em, best thing I ever bought for the car. Two of those Yokohamas are still on the car with plenty of tread, believe it or not, and the other two would be if I hadn't hit a pothole. That makes me wonder even more though, Big_Ham's '98 has the other wheels.

Maybe I'll get Dave B. to stick his nose in here.

Please do. I've been dying to know the answer to this for a long time.
