Anyone know How the Off set numbers work when buying rims

I just bent one of my chrome rims and need to get new ones. I want to get something with a chrome lip and are light weight. But I also dont want the rims to stick past the wheel well. so if anyone out there could shed me some light on how this works.

between 35-45 will work.
35 probably the max before they stick out and 45 is close to the max before they rub your struts. 40 may be ideal

that should help you a lot. I am happy with my 18x8's with 35mm offset, they pretty much sit flush, or close to it.

What year or generation car are we talking here? It matters...

EDIT: Nevermind your profile says 4th Gen, in which case I don't know.
