Tire size for Continental ExtremeContact

Okay guys. I just bought 17" 2k2 SE rims. I want to put some Continental ExtremeContact on there. Seeing how they dont have stock size (225/50/17) wondering what sizes would work nicely. I have heard 245/45/17 has minimal difference in feedback. This correct? Will they fit on the tire? Anyone does this? Thanks for the help.

I put those exact tires on my 98 Maxima when I got 17x7" wheels. I went with 215/50/17's, matched my stock tire diameter very closely (215/55/16's).

I wanted to go with 225's or bigger, but for some reason the 215's were a good amount cheaper. Understandable that you don't wanna lose any width compared to stock... but is that 10mm worth about $20 more per tire? Well, to some people I'm sure

LOVE these tires. I can see why they got such awesome ratings on Tirerack.com. There really isn't anything out there for under $200/tire that can touch em... traction, temp, treadwear - these things kick ***!

Pics of the tires on my car on my site linked in my sig. I'll have some better ones once I put my springs on this weekend.

Okay, so far I have also 215/50/17, which is close to the 225/50/17. But will I have any problems with the 245/45/17? No bulging or anything? And is it worth it to go 245/45/17 as opposed to 215/50/17? Its about $100 difference. Thanks for the help, and keep it coming. I take delivery on 2k2 SE's soon!

I spoke to someone once when I was looking for the right tire size for my wheels (he had the same wheels). I think he had 245/45/17's, he didn't mention any problems. Personally I think my 215's look perfect on my 7" wide rims, so a 245 might look slightly bulgy. I had a pic of his car, but I don't have it here with me. Wasn't exactly the look I was going for, but perhaps you're more worried about performance than looks.

I'm no expert, so hopefully someone else with more tire fitting experience chimes in.

245s are too wide for wheels with 7" width like factory 17s.. IMHO

225/45/17 would look ideal.. especially on a 4th gen.. 235/45/17 will work ok too..

i think the diameter thing is not that big of a deal.. as long as the difference is minimal.. trying to match the rotating diameter to factory may sacrifice some looks and performance of the tire.. so it's not really worth it..

45s are a must on any 17" wheels on a 4th gen in my opinion.. otherwise the sidewall looks too tall.

btw, nice choice in tire.

yeah, 235/45's would be nice... but since I only have 215's, a 50-series doesn't look bad at all. The difference in sidewall height from a 235/45 to a 215/50 is only about 2mm. Plus, with the lovely condition of Chicago/IL roads... having a little extra sidewall as rim protection isn't a bad thing!

My overall tire diameter grew ~4mm. A 235/45/17 woulda been closer to stock height (642.9mm stock vs. 643.3mm) but that size was considerably more $$$!

Plenty of wheelwell to fill out on these 4th gens anyways. I am absolutely 100% happy with the look of my 215/50/17's.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to reconsider which tires to get. I went to the tire calculator sticky, and the 245/45/17 seemed the closest to stock. I also read on here that they were the closest to stock. Oh I'm so confused!

So people....225/45/17 or 235/45/17? Need an answer, as I'm buying the tires soon. Thanks for all the replies, past, present, and future.

I decided to give the extreme contact a shot...the only size in stock I can find in the city is 215/50/17. I'm going to put them on today, and if they don't feel or look right then I will order the 235/45/17 to see how they handle.

That's the exact size I got... totally happy with the looks and handling. What width rim are you putting them on? Mine are 7" wide, filled em out perfectly. Check out my site for some more pics of the tires on my car.

I have a 2002 Max with the 225/50/17 stock rims. Hopefully the 215/50/17 isn't too narrow. I'll know very shortly...

I think the Nissan 17" wheels are 7" wide, so I wouldn't expect you to have a problem or complaint. How much you get the ContiExtremes for? I ordered mine off Tirerack online, got em to my door for about $375. Great tires... from what I've heard of those stock Potenzas (I assume that's what you're replacing) you'll love these ContiExtremes.

Just bought these tires a few minutes ago from tirerack. I chose the 235/45/17's for my Max. I have BFgoodrich KWDS's(same size) on right now, so I am curious to how they compare.

With whatever you decide, try not to get 245-wide tires because I think they are too wide. But then it's just my 2 cents.

Well, the 215/50's seem to be working fine on the 225/50 rims. I put them on right before I was heading off to the Smokey Mountains. I've gone 800 miles on them in the past several days of rain and windey roads WITH my car packed full of camping crap.

So far they seem to grip the road noticably better in the rain than the potenzas that came with the 02's.

So what I've seen and read...either the 215/50's or the 235/45 should work fine.

Oh, and I ended up paying $110 a tire... (I was in a hurry to get them before I went on my trip)

I am sick of reading all the tire threads with people that do not know what they are talking about so I am going to tell you thisl.
You cannot run a 225/45 on a 17X7 rim for a maxima. The load bering ratio has to be at least 93 and most if not all 225/45s are under that. With that said, today I put on a set of Continental Contiextreme Contact tires in the size 235/45 17. If you have a tire installer that is not the greatest he is going to have a ***** of a time getting these on. It took where I went a bit longer than normal because of the profile. But I can tell you that I have 100 miles on them today and they run ciricles around the OEM tires. And for half the price of the Pilots A/S I will take them any day of the week. Should you get them you will need to baby them for 500 -1000 miles to not only break them in but to make sure that the tire does not re-sit itself because of the slightly excessive size.

Looks like you don't really know what you're talking about either. I've seen people here in the forum running 225/45/17 tires on their OEM 17" rims and they're having no problems at all. Are they running out of spec? Yes. Are they having problems? No.

For me, I think I'll just get 215/50/17 tires to replace OEM Craptenza's.

The conti extreme contacts are great tires for the money. These are the first set of tires i bought for my 17's when i bought my new rims. would recommend them as the best bang for the buck.
